In this work, La Serna combines echoes of cubism, visible in the simplification of the volumes, with an emotional tension close to expressionism. The deformation of the neck, the intensity of the gesture and the chromatic rotundity turn the figure into an image of great psychological charge. The tempera technique on canvas glued to wood reinforces the dryness of the surface and accentuates the direct, essential and powerful character of the painting. "Figura" belongs to a moment of full creative maturity of Ismael González de la Serna, when the artist, settled in Paris since the beginning of the decade, had assimilated in a personal way the main contributions of the European avant-garde. The work presents a female bust of intense presence, cut out against a dark background that focuses attention on the face, with a marked profile, a shadowed gaze and a half-open mouth. Ismael González de la Serna trained in Granada and at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. In 1918 he illustrated Impresiones y paisajes, Federico García Lorca's first book, held his first exhibition in Granada and shortly after showed his work at the Ateneo de Madrid. In 1921 he moved to Paris, where he joined the School of Paris and assimilated, from a personal point of view, influences of cubism and expressionism. His international projection was consolidated with his solo exhibition at the Paul Guillaume Gallery in Paris in 1927, followed by exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Granada and Mexico. In 1928 he illustrated an edition of Góngora's sonnets for Cahiers d'Art, and in 1932 he inaugurated the activities of the Association of Iberian Artists in Madrid. His work is present in the Reina Sofía Museum, the Patio Herreriano Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Granada and Seville, ARTIUM, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vilafamés and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

In this scene, of agile drawing, two hybrid figures, between the human and the animal, are linked in an ambiguous action that oscillates between the embrace, the fight and the theatrical representation. The zoomorphic faces, with biting and almost grotesque gestures, introduce a fantastic and satirical dimension that is very close to the artist's imagination. The work stands out for the security of the stroke and for the use of lines as a resource of volume, shadow and dramatic tension. The scene participates in a universe close to the surrealism in which De la Serna moved, a visual fable in which the figure becomes mask, symbol and apparition. Ismael de la Serna was an artist linked to the School of Paris. Measurements: 60 x 81 cm; 80 x 100 cm (frame). Ismael González de la Serna begins his art studies in Granada and concludes them in Madrid, in the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando. In his early years he developed an eclectic pictorial style, which draws from impressionist, symbolist and modernist sources. One of the first examples of his youthful language can be found in the illustrations he made for his childhood friend Federico García Lorca, in what would be his first book, "Impresiones y paisajes" (1918). That same year, Ismael de la Serna held his first exhibition in Granada, and shortly afterwards he presented his works at the Ateneo de Madrid. In 1921 he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic horizons, joining the circles of the School of Paris. Among his Parisian friends was Pablo Picasso, who influenced his work but was, above all, the protector of the painter from Granada. De la Serna's style was, in this period, permeable to the influences of the avant-garde, mainly cubism and expressionism, which he worked in a very personal way. Likewise, the initial influence of impressionism was always evident in his work. The year 1927 marked the beginning of a period of strong projection of his work, which began with the solo exhibition that the painter held at the influential Parisian gallery of Paul Guillaume. This exhibition was followed by many others, both in Paris and in Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Granada and Mexico. In 1928 he was commissioned by the director of "Cahiers d'Art", Christian Zervos, to illustrate a special edition of twenty sonnets by Góngora. The key to his recognition is to be found in his sensual reading of the forms of cubism, based on the relevance of a drawing of sinuous and highly decorative lines, combined with strong chromatic hallmarks. With a marked spatial sense and without ever abandoning figuration, De la Serna mainly represented still lifes, where he accentuated the sensory side of his painting with metaphorical sensory references, such as music, fruit or open windows. He also worked on landscapes and portraits. After inaugurating with a solo exhibition the activities of the Association of Iberian Artists in Madrid in 1932, the painter embarked on new paths of plastic experimentation that would lead, after the Second World War, to a more schematic and simplified painting, close to contemporary abstract solutions. Ismael de la Serna is represented in the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Fine Arts Museums of Granada and Seville, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Popular Museum of Contemporary Art in Vilafamés and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, among many others.

In his early years he developed an eclectic pictorial style, which draws from impressionist, symbolist and modernist sources. One of the first examples of his youthful language can be found in the illustrations he made for his childhood friend Federico García Lorca, in what would be his first book, "Impresiones y paisajes" (1918). That same year, Ismael de la Serna held his first exhibition in Granada, and shortly afterwards he presented his works at the Ateneo de Madrid. In 1921 he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic horizons, joining the circles of the School of Paris. Among his Parisian friends, Pablo Picasso stood out, who influenced his work but was, above all, a protector of the painter from Granada. Likewise, the initial influence of impressionism was always evident in his work. The year 1927 marked the beginning of a period of strong projection of his work, which began with the individual exhibition that the painter held in the influential Parisian gallery of Paul Guillaume. This exhibition was followed by many others, both in Paris and in Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Granada and Mexico. In 1928 he was commissioned by the director of "Cahiers d'Art", Christian Zervos, to illustrate a special edition of twenty sonnets by Góngora. The key to his recognition is to be found in his sensual reading of the forms of cubism, based on the relevance of a drawing of sinuous and highly decorative lines, combined with strong chromatic hallmarks. With a marked spatial sense and without ever abandoning figuration, De la Serna mainly represented still lifes, where he accentuated the sensory side of his painting with metaphorical sensory references, such as music, fruit or open windows. He also worked on landscapes and portraits. After inaugurating with a solo exhibition the activities of the Association of Iberian Artists in Madrid in 1932, the painter embarked on new paths of plastic experimentation that would lead, after the Second World War, to a more schematic and simplified painting, close to contemporary abstract solutions. Ismael de la Serna is represented in the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Fine Arts Museums of Granada and Seville, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Popular Museum of Contemporary Art in Vilafamés and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, among many others.

At the age of 16, he settled in Madrid. The exhibition 'Great French Impressionist Painters' at the Museo de Arte Moderno influenced him deeply. In 1921 he traveled to Paris where he met Picasso, Tériade, Christian Zervos, and Jean Cassou, who was his greatest supporter. At this time, his painting adopted the aesthetic of Post-Cubism and also included classical references and Surrealist echoes. During the Spanish Civil War, González de la Serna accentuated his expressionist bent, redolent of the Germanic tradition. His work began to shed the influence of Cubism and alternated through different phases influenced by Surrealism, Expressionism and abstraction. At the same time he began to accentuate technical concerns in detriment to the subject. His still lifes, landscapes, and figures reflect a grotesque and expressionist vision of a tragic Spain. In 1937 his work was included in the Spanish Republic's Pavilion at the Paris World's Fair. After the war, he seldom appeared on the art scene.
