Fatherless Children of France. ca. 1917.

ARTIST: WALTER DE MARIS (1877-1947) SIZE: 20 1/4 x 30 in./51.5 x 76.2 cm PRINTER: American Lithographic Co., NY DESCRIPTION: A startlingly poignant poster for war relief ("Do you have a place in your heart for us?"), made all the more so by De Maris's artistic style here, which resembles children's fairy tales of the early 20th century. By 1915, there were so many French fathers dead at the Western Front, the French government could not support widows and their children. Just 10 cents a day, or $36.50 a year, was needed to care for children, so the charity Fatherless Children of France arranged for subscribers to 'adopt' a child – seemingly a precursor of Christian Aid organizations today. De Maris, the artist, was an illustrator for Harper's, the Saturday Evening Post, Puck, Life Magazine... and numerous pulp magazine covers throughout his career. His neighbors in New Rochelle, NY included Norman Rockwell, Frederick Remington, and Frank Leyendecker. (War)
