MARCHESA' (lower left) Gouache 16 x 24in. (40.5 x 61cm.) The screw schooner Marchesa was designed and built by Lobnitz, Coulborn & Co. at Renfrew in 1877. Registered at 377 tons (Thames), she measured 138½ feet in length with a 25- foot beam and was owned for many years by Mr Charles Kettlewell of Dumbleton Hall, Evesham, Gloucestershire. Obviously well-travelled, judging by the fact that Marchesa was surveyed by Lloyd's Register at Singapore in 1884, Mr Kettlewell sold her at the end of 1891 and replaced her with a newer steam yacht (the Queen Marfisa of 1887) which he renamed Marchesa in honour of her predecessor. Rubbing to top right.

(lower right) and 'S.Y. Zoraide' (lower left) Watercolour heightened with white 16¼ x 25½in. (41.5 x 64.5cm.) Designed by St. Clare J. Byrne for Mr. Thomas J. Waller of Baynard's Park, Horsham, Sussex, the twin-screw schooner Zoraide was built by Earle's at Hull in 1894. Registered at 549 tons (Thames) and measuring 168½ feet in length with a 27-foot beam, she was engined by her builders and rated 100A1 by Lloyd's surveyors when completed. In 1898 she was sold to Comte Vitali of Paris who renamed her Fiorentina II but only kept her a few years before selling her to Duc Decazes, another Parisian, who rechristened her Sylvabelle. Sold yet again in 1909 to Kenneth M. Clark of Sudbourne Hall, Orford, Suffolk, she reverted to her original name of Zoraide and remained thus from September 1914 to March 1919 when she was hired by the Admiralty as an auxiliary patrol yacht armed with 1-12 pdr. and 1-6 pdr. guns. Untraced after her Great War service ended, it is likely she was scrapped due to her poor post-War condition. Some modest fading, water staining in the middle sky.

BIOGRAPHY: Among the 19th and 20th century ship portraitists who practiced in Italian seaport cities, the father and son, Tommaso and Antonio de Simone are probably the best known. The son, Antonio de Simone worked in watercolor and watercolor variants, chiefly but not limited to gouache, while Tommaso, the father, is noted for working exclusively in oils. Antonio specialized in portraits of the great society yachts of the period, successfully capturing just about every important private yacht to visit Naples. These fine portraits were commissioned by the owners to show their vessels at anchor under Mount Vesuvius during their Mediterranean cruises. A noted aspect of his paintings is his use of a brilliant cerulean blue to portray sea and sky. Works by both Antonio and Tommaso de Simone are well known and recognized throughout the seafaring community. Their paintings have been sought out and acquired by many of the world's foremost museums and collectors. In recent years the investment value of works by the de Simones has increased dramatically as their paintings become more scarce and increasingly sought after. Their headland coastal views are some of the best to be found.
