Simon de Vlieger, 1601 Rotterdam – 1653 Weesp

    Est: €15,000 - €25,000

ZOLLHAUS AM HAFEN Öl auf Holz. 56,2 x 69,8 cm. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. Stimmungsvolle Darstellung in überwiegend monochromer grau-brauner Farbigkeit. Feb. 07, 2026

Vlieger, Simon Jacobsz. de (ca. 1600 - 1653), Succession,

    Est: -

Vlieger, Simon Jacobsz. de (ca. 1600 - 1653), Succession, "Ships on the Coast", oil on panel, 44.5 x 59.8 cm, wood panel slightly curved, plastering in the sky, partial retouching. The composition against a dark, cloudy sky, sailor and fishing boat landing on a flat coastal landscape, is reminiscent of Simon de Vlieger in terms of composition, colouring and the staggered lighting conditions. The chiaroscuro in calm seas, the bright streak of light before or after heavy weather was often one of his compositional elements. In contrast to de Vlieger's works, however, the staffage of people, hulls and sails are somewhat less elaborate. The type of ship of the sailor with only one mast but large galleons on the left in the foreground is unclear. Although not by de Vlieger, the clear reference to the artist's oeuvre cannot be denied.

Die Zeichnung selbst etwas angeschmutzt, aber insgesamt in schöner Erhaltung With old album mounting, with tear lower centre. Jahrhunderts findet. A prominent, but technically rather unusual sheet for De Vlieger, as his favoured medium was chalk drawing. The scene captures the hustle and bustle of the fishermen after the boats have landed. The catch of the day is being examined in baskets. The mighty tower of a church accentuates the left-hand edge of the drawing. Churches close to the shore were not uncommon - the Oude Kerk in Scheveningen, for example, appears several times in De Vlieger's work. In the picture, the church refers to the God-pleasing nature of human endeavour in the reformed Netherlands. In addition, "Christian seafaring" is also a term that has appeared in Dutch devotional books since the end of the 16th century. Vlieger, Simon de Rotterdam 1601 - Weesp 1653 34,5 x 26,5 cm A jetty with a rowing boat and fishermen. Oil/oak panel, signed on the rowing boat S DE VLIEGER. Sale A. Lehmann, Paris, Galerie G. Petit, 12.6.1925, lot 293; Ferdinand III Mülhens Collection, Cologne. Expert report by Dr. Ulrike Middendorf. At dawn, two fishermen load or unload their boat at a jetty with a signal mast. They are coastal fishermen with their fish baskets to keep the catch fresh. The upright format of the painting, unusual for a marine, consists mostly of sky, with the upper dark clouds casting their shadows on the lower water's edge, which sums up the composition. The almost monochrome painting is a prime example of so-called 'tonalist' landscape and marine painting with a highly reduced colour palette. Jan van Goyen and Jan Porcellis were also notable representatives of this style in the first half of the 17th century in the Netherlands. Jan Kelch writes about the painting: "(... )so the "Mooring with Rowboats and Fishermen" from the former Lehmann Collection in Paris (...) can be described as a modestly formulated offshoot of the theme shaped by the painting in the Mnizech Collection. The work from the Lehmann Collection elevates the main motif of the Mnizech marine, the landing stage equipped with a sea mark and rowing boats, to an independent and form-determining object. We may date this seascape not much later than the one in the Mnizech collection of 1636. The motif of the fisherman sitting on the landing stage as well as the construction and drawing of the picturesquely weathered beam structure point to a close chronological proximity. According to the time of origin of the painting, it belongs to the Delft years of de Vlieger between 1634-1638. We are grateful to Dr. Ulrike Middendorf for advise. Est: €10,000 - €12,000

17th century Dutch school. "Marina". Oil on canvas. Presents tasting of cleaning. It shows label on the back with old attribution to the artist Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger (Rotterdam, 1601- Holland, 1653). Possesses an early 20th century frame. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid. Size: 96 x 139 cm; 109 x 155 cm (frame). In this canvas is reproduced, in detail, a naval scene with three big ships placed in the different planes. Two of the ships are placed parallel to each other, and the third in the foreground. To accentuate the drama of the scene, the painter plunges the foreground into darkness, giving the waters of the sea a dark, ominous tone, which lightens in the background, reinforcing the construction of space in depth in a scene that lacks spatial references, given that it is the open sea delimited by the coast. The masts, sails and flags of the boats in the foregrounds also contribute to this construction of the scene, which follow one after the other in depth, worked in a precise, draughtsmanlike style. In fact, the scene in general is treated with a descriptive and highly narrative language. This is due to the genre itself, as the main purpose of this type of painting is to relate a historical event rather than to depict the beauty of nature. Landscape painting acquired considerable importance in the Netherlands from the second half of the 17th century and throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period artists produced both urban views or architectural interiors where the human presence was non-existent or entirely secondary, as well as rural or country landscapes and seascapes. The pure seascapes were a reflection of Holland's extremely powerful foreign trade and large naval fleet. In marine painting, artists very often opted for turbulent views, dominated by grey, stormy skies and ships confronting the elements.

    Est: €30,000 - €60,000

Simon de Vlieger Storm on the Meuse oil on panel 31.5 x 40 cm signed on a spar on the lower left: S DE VLIEG Galerie St. Lucas, Vienna 1982/83; collection Erna Weidinger (1923–2021) Winter 1982/83 Vienna, Galerie St. Lucas, old master paintings, No. 8 The United Netherlands and especially the maritime province of Holland had already overtaken Spain and Portugal as the leading maritime power, and cities such as Amsterdam advanced to become economic centres of trade. These developments had a marked influence on the artistic trends in the Netherlands in the 17th century. More and more painters were preoccupied with the maritime world. A large number of seascapes, beach and dune landscapes also found numerous passionate collectors. With Simon de Vlieger, his pupil Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) or Jan van de Capelle (1626-1679), Dutch marine painting was at its peak. Simon de Vlieger belonged to a handful of Dutch painters who already achieved prosperity and fame during their lifetime. As a pupil of Jan Porcellis (1582-1632) and Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611-1993), the painter continued the development of this popular genre of landscape painting. Initially still dominated by a strict, almost monochrome tonality, Vlieger's treatment of light and clouds as well as finely coordinated ochre, blue and grey tones gradually lend his paintings ever more convincing pictorial depth and impressive atmosphere. He also developed the typical short wave beat and the almost rippling spray of the storm-tossed sea. Landscape depictions formed only a part of his oeuvre. The painter and graphic artist Vlieger produced patterns for tapestries, interior decorations for burghers' houses in Delft, as well as decoration designs for the festivities in honour of the entry of Maria de' Medici into Amsterdam. In his later years, Vlieger was commissioned to paint the organ doors in the Grote Kerk in Rotterdam and the windows on the south side of the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.

Simon de Vlieger, Stormy Seas With A Shipwreck Near The Rocky Shore

    Est: €40,000 - €50,000

Signed and dated lower right: S. de Vlieger/1642 A ship drifts helplessly on rough seas. Its masts have snapped and its crew, who jumped overboard long ago, now attempt to reach the coast in rowing boats, but towering waves crash against them and threaten to engulf their craft. Some of the boats have already capsized and their former occupants cling desperately to pieces of floating wood - many of them destined to lose their lives in the floods. This composition demonstrates why Simon de Vlieger became one of the most sought-after Dutch maritime painters of his time. He was able to capture the drama and immensity of a shipwreck like no other artist: The waves shooting cascades of white spray into the air, the steep rocky coastlines that betray the foreign origins of his scenes, the minute figures who appear lost within his monumental compositions. With a sure eye for painterly effects, Vlieger depicts the dramatic battle of a crew against the elements in a hostile coastline far from home. Foreign trade formed one of the pillars of Dutch wealth. It was as fraught with danger as it was lucrative. The Dutch, who were always innovative in financial matters, secured themselves against this risk with maritime insurances; the walls of their homes, the decorated with depictions of sailors facing all manner of peril in foreign lands. Thus, shipwrecks became a popular subject and were rendered in dramatic compositions by artists such as Jan Porcellis, Ludolf Backhuyzen and Simon de Vlieger.
