Despite the serious subject matter showing the arduous nature of farm life Dearden has chosen a light pastel palette which brings to life the figures across the canvas creating an idyllic rural setting. Dearden studied at Rochdale School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art between 1910-1915 under the tutelage of Gerald Moira, the English muralist. Dearden moved to Swindon where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He became head of the Swindon Art School from 1920 and president of Swindon Artist's Society.
