Inscriptions on the bottom: "Carle Vernet del.", "Debucourt Sculp." and "A Paris chez Rolland, Place des Victoires, No. 6. Elizabethan mahogany wood frame with zinc marquetry. Measurements: 47 x 56 cm, 66 x 78 cm (frame). Colored engraving of cynegetic subject, made from a composition by Carle Vernet and engraving by Philibert-Louis Debucourt, two prominent figures of French art of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The composition responds to the French taste for hunting and riding scenes, a genre in which Vernet achieved great recognition for the elegance of his figures, the precision in the representation of the horse and the narrative character of his scenes. Debucourt, for his part, translates the image into engraving with refinement, preserving the descriptive vividness and decorative appeal of the composition. The editorial inscription "A Paris chez Rolland, Place des Victoires, No. 6" places the print in the context of the Parisian production and marketing of engravings, intended both for collecting and interior decoration. The work is presented in an Elizabethan mahogany wood frame with zinc marquetry, which reinforces its ornamental character.

Provenance: With Stephen Ongpin Fine Art, London, where purchased by the family of the present owner, 2016 Notes: Louis-Philibert Debucourtâs career traces a path from traditional academic training to technical innovation, culminating in his status as one of the most important French colour printmakers of the late eighteenth century. Born in 1755, he entered the AcadÃ©mie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1774 at just nineteen, studying under Joseph-Marie Vien. His early ambitions were firmly rooted in painting, and he exhibited at the Salons of 1781, 1783, and 1785, gaining full membership to the AcadÃ©mie in 1786. Despite this institutional recognition, his paintings brought him limited critical attention, and financial success remained elusive. It was through printmaking, specifically colour aquatints, that Debucourt found his true artistic footing. By the 1790s he had earned a reputation as one of the most innovative colour printmakers of his generation, mastering complex multi-plate techniques. These prints often provided a more reliable income than his paintings, and he became deeply absorbed in the technical possibilities of colour, producing some of the most accomplished examples of the period.

Keiner ahnte, dass die erst 1791 geschaffene konstitutionelle Monarchie mit der Inhaftierung Ludwigs XVI. und seiner Familie im August enden und die Geschichte einen blutigen Verlauf nehmen würde. Debucourt fügte einzelne Porträts in seine Darstellung ein, etwa jenes des jungen Louis Philippe, Duc de Chartres, der die Hinrichtungswellen überleben und 1830 als König den französischen Thron besteigen sollte. Er tänzelt auf Zehenspitzen im Vordergrund und verteilt einen Handkuss. Für die gesamte Komposition, insbesondere für ihre karikierenden Elemente, diente Debucourt die 1785 entstandene handkolorierte Aquatintaradierung "Vauxhall Gardens" nach Thomas Rowlandson als Inspiration. Debucourt schuf mit seinem Blatt einen grandiosen bildlichen Abgesang auf das Ancien Régime. The artist’s principal graphic work. The largest colour etching of the 18th century, in which even aquatint is used. Debucourt captures a carefree summer’s day in 1792, presumably in the garden of the Palais Royal in Paris. In this protected area, high Parisian society gathers for cheerful amusement. No one suspected that the constitutional monarchy, created only in 1791, would end with the imprisonment of Louis XVI and his family in August, and that history would take a bloody turn. Debucourt included individual portraits in his depiction, such as that of the young Louis Philippe, Duc de Chartres, who would survive the waves of executions and ascend the French throne as king in 1830. He tiptoes in the foreground and distributes a hand kiss. For the entire composition, especially for its caricature elements, Debucourt took as inspiration the hand-coloured aquatint etching "Vauxhall Gardens" after Thomas Rowlandson from 1785. With his print, Debucourt created a magnificent pictorial swan song to the Ancien Régime. Originaltitel 1792 erschien die gleichnamige Farbaquatintaradierung Debucourts und alles spricht dafür, dieses so feinmalerisch und detailreich ausgeführte Kabinettbild ebenfalls dem Künstler zuzuschreiben. Inspiriert von Thomas Rowlandsons "Vauxhall Gardens" (1785) zeigt "La Promenade Publique" eine Menschenmenge, die sich in einem Park im Zentrum von Paris versammelt hat und sich gegenseitig bewundert. Auf den ersten Blick wirkt das Werk wie eine rein fiktive Satire, doch wagte es Debucourt auch reale, berühmte Persönlichkeiten des französischen Adels einzufügen: den Herzog von Aumount, der sich hier auf drei Stühlen im Zentrum der Komposition lümmelt oder den Herzog von Chartres (späterer König Ludwig XVIII.). Es gibt einen letzten Einblick in die Sitten und das Leben des Ancien Régime, dessen selbstverliebte Figuren noch nicht ahnen, dass ihre extravagante, ruhige, dekadente Welt innerhalb weniger Wochen zusammenbrechen wird und viele Einwohner von Paris und ganz Frankreich nach dem Tuileriensturm (10. 08.1792) in den Jahren der Terrorherrschaft 1793/94 zum Opfer fallen werden. Most of his work was, however, in aquatint. He became the leading maker of multi-plate colour prints, combining washes of aquatint with line-engraving.He used a number of different techniques, but most involved three colour plates, and a fourth key plate, outlining the design in black.

PHILIBERT-LOUIS DEBUCOURT La Promenade Publique. Color aquatint, etching and engraving printed in carmine, dark pink, yellow, blue and black, 1792. 460x618 mm; 18 1/4x24 1/2 inches (sheet). Third state (of 3). Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark, with the entire composition, border line, text and registration mark in the lower center margin preserved. A superb, well-registered impression of this extremely scarce, important print, with strong colors, the very fugitive pinks and roses still distinct and the foliage in the upper portion of the plate particularly strong. Debucourt's (1755-1832) La Promenade Publique was published in Paris in the first half of 1792. The second half of the same year saw riots, the August 10, 1792 massacre of Louis XVI's Swiss Guards, the descent into chaos of the Legislative Assembly, foreign invasion, the abolition of the monarchy and with that the abolition of the year itself: September 22, 1792 became day one of month one of year one of the new Republican Calendar. Debucourt's print shows the Parisian aristocrats at play before the French Revolution erupted: dancing, gambling and gossiping, carefree and seeminglingly oblivious to the forthcoming nightmare. According to Ittmann, "The fops vie with the infamous beauties of the day, innocently unaware of the impending massacres of September 1792. Debucourt dared to include portraits of the little, pink-clad duc d'Aumount indolently sprawling across three chairs and the future Louis XVIII, then the duc de Chartres, simpering on tiptoe to blow a kiss to an admiring friend, little more than a year before the execution of his father, Philippe-Egalité. Probably for this reason, Debucourt chose to issue this print without the usual fanfare of a press announcement and inscribed it with the address of the printseller Depeuille instead of his own," ( Regency to Empire, French Printmaking 1715-1814, Minneapolis, 1984, p. 290). As Salaman grisly noted of the characters represented in this scene, they "had yet to hear the thud of a head falling into a basket," ( Masters of the Colour Print: P. L. Debucourt, London, 1929).
