An important book containing the rare series of engravings illustrating the battles of the War of the Spanish Succession, containing 56 double-page engraved allegorical plates by Paul Decker (1677-1713), published by Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg 'Repraesentatio belli, ob successionem in regno Hispanico [.] Der Spanische Successionskrieg [.]' Decker's suite depicts the battles of the complex series of engagements that became known as the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714). Prompted by the death of the last of the Spanish Habsburg Kings, the childless Charles II, and with a shifting group of alliances and a field of warfare that included not only Continental Europe and the Mediterranean, but also the Caribbean and North America, the War of the Spanish Succession has a case to be a true world war. In part an attempt to check French hegemony, the war featured a number of outstanding victories for the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy, including Blenheim, although the war was ultimately, at best, indecisive. Each of Decker's magnificent plates features a single engagement, depicted in the central portion of the plate, the whole image surrounded by a decorative border composed of architectural, allegorical, and armorial symbols and motifs in the Baroque manner, and a descriptive text concerning the battle. Many of the plates feature an additional small vignette of the battlefield keyed to the descriptive text and illustrating the placement of the armies and the key figures involved.

Vorzeichnung zu einer der großen Tafeln in Band 1 von Paul Deckers "Fürstlicher Baumeister, Oder: Architectura Civilis: Wie Grosser Fürsten und Herren Palläste, mit ihren Höfen, Lust-Häusern, Gärten ... Inventiert und gezeichnet Durch Paulus Decker ...", erschienen bei Wolff in Augsburg 1711. Dargestellt ist eine reiche Deckendekoration für ein fürstliches Schlafgemach. Die spiegelverkehrte Vorzeichnung ist abermals symmetrisch angelegt und zeigt, eingebettet in ein architektonisches Gerüst, nach Gottheiten benannte Planeten und Gestirne wie Luna, Sol, Merkur und Venus, sowie allegorische Darstellungen von Himmelserscheinungen wie den Winden und Tageszeiten.

Das fein und akkurat ausgeführte große Blatt ist die Vorzeichnung zu einer der großen Tafeln in Band 1 von Paul Deckers "Fürstlicher Baumeister, Oder: Architectura Civilis: Wie Grosser Fürsten und Herren Palläste, mit ihren Höfen, Lust-Häusern, Gärten ... Inventiert und gezeichnet Durch Paulus Decker ...", erschienen bei Wolff in Augsburg 1711. Dargestellt ist eine reiche Deckendekoration für eines der Vorzimmer vor dem Audienzsaal. Die streng symmetrische Anlage zeigt in den vier Ecken je einen Baldachin mit mythologischer Figur im Zentrum, begleitet von Allegorien der vier Jahreszeiten. Üppiges Bandelwerk führt zum Zentrum der Decke, in dem eine große Kartusche ein Gemälde mit Apoll als Sonnengott Sol einfasst. Decker gibt damit einen zwar sehr detailreichen, aber auch recht allgemeinen Anstoß, wie so ein Vorzimmer zu gestalten wäre. - Von den ursprünglich fünf geplanten Bänden kam zu seinen Lebzeiten nur der erste Band mit Anhang zur Ausführung. Er widmet sich ganz der Anlage und Ausgestaltung eines fürstlichen Palastes und seinen Gartenanlagen. Postum wurde aus seinen Zeichnungen noch ein zweiter Band veröffentlicht. Unser Blatt mit der Darstellung aus dem ersten Band, ist damit vom Künstler für genau jenen Ort in seinem Werk vorgesehen und publiziert worden. Band 2 mit der idealen Darstellung eines königlichen Palastes blieb aufgrund des frühen Todes des talentierten Architekten unvollständig.

Paul Decker (1677 - 1713), one of the most important exponents of German Baroque, went to Berlin to study under Schlüter, then returned to his native Nürnberg to become architect of Salzbach in Bavaria and later of the Bayreuth Court where his influence is clear, for instance, in Ränz's Hermitage built between 1715 and 1718. He had little opportunity of putting his grandiose fantasy to practical tests, but in the pages of his book designed one of the most complete and magnificent palace-and-grounds schemes any King of his time could have wished for. These designs, superbly engraved by the best masters of the period, show an extension of the high-point of Italian baroque building, sculpting and quadratura painting, while at the same time spreading the taste of Louis XIV decoration as defined in the work of Berain.

Broadsheet (574 x 425mm). Engraved title in Latin and German, one letterpress leaf in Italian printed in double column, 56 engraved plates, the majority by P.A. Corvinus, others by M. Engelbrecht, J.A. Friderich, J.J. Kleinschmid, J. … Montalegre, J.B. Probst, C. Rembshart, G.H. Schilfflen, and G. Stein after Paul Decker the Elder, Paul Decker the Younger, Abraham Drentwett, and G.P. Rugendas. (A little light marginal spotting and browning.) Contemporary calf, red speckled edges (rebacked). Provenance : Earl of Rochford, Nassau (armorial bookplate). A fine copy of this highly decorative series celebrating the victories of Austria, the German states, Great Britain, Holland, Denmark and Portugal, in the War of the Spanish Succession, 1700-1713. The final two plates depict the triumphal coronation of Charles VI and the signing of the treaty of Rasdtatt at Baden, but the central event of most plates is a land or sea battle or siege, surrounded by a wide rococo or architectural border, incorporating a panel with explanatory text in Italian, and usually a cartouche with a map or plan of the area shown. Both the introduction and plate list, in Italian, are on a single letterpress leaf. The Berlin Kat. only records the issue with 2 letterpress leaves in German, and the engraved explanatory text in German. Berlin Kat. 103; Brunet II, 557.
