The figure is a muscular, dark-skinned man standing on a rocky outcrop by the sea and is depicted with shackles around his ankles and a metal collar around his neck, indicating he is a slave. In the background, there is a ship on the water to the left, likely a vessel related to the slave trade. Given the subject matter-an enslaved man on a coast-and the artist's period, this print likely relates to the abolitionist movement or a scene from a region associated with the slave trade, possibly depicting a specific moment of despair or defiance. Dimensions : 21,5 x 32,5 cm Peintre français, dessinateur, aquarelliste et graveur d’histoire, de scènes typiques et de genre né à Paris, il est l’un des plus brillants représentants de l’Ecole orientaliste et romantique de son époque. Il suit une formation dans l’atelier d’Etienne Brouhot et se perfectionne chez Abel de Pujol tout en s’exerçant au Louvre à l’Ecole des grand maîtres flamands mais surtout de Rembrandt. Attiré très tôt par les sujets orientaux, Decamps est envoyé en mission en Grèce en compagnie du peintre Garneray, chargés de représenter la victoire de Navarin. Il poursuit son périple à Constantinople, en Asie Mineure et au Moyen-Orient, devenu pour lui source d’inspiration. Il débute au Salon de 1928, mais c’est en 1931 et plus encore en 1934 qu’il assoit définitivement sa réputation d’ « inventeur de l’Orient ». Après ce coup d’éclat, il voyage en Italie et étudie les œuvres de Raphaël et du Titien. Sa santé se dégrade vers 1853, mais Decamps obtiendra encore un immense succès à l’Exposition Universelle de 1855, présentant une large rétrospective de son œuvre. Principaux musées : un partie importante de son œuvre est conservée au Louvre, au Musée Condé de Chantilly et à la Wallace Collection de Londres, mais également au Metropolitan New York, Art Institute Chicago, l’Hermitage Saint-Pétersbourg, Musée d’Orsay Paris, Courtauld Institute Londres, Rijksmusem Amsterdam, etc.
