Oil painting on canvas Alfred de Dreux is one of the first romantic painters of the eighteenth century. Born into a family of artists, his father was an architect who in 1815 won the Grand Prix de Rome so the whole family moved to Rome where they could admire the ancient ruins. He met Theodore Gericault, who was one of his first teachers and exhibited numerous times at the French National Salon in Paris. His production is characterized by noble portraits and on horseback including the Duke of Orléans, son of Louis Philippe of France. Signed lower right, signature faded and barely legible.

Exhibited: Malborough Fine Art Ltd., Old Bond Street, London, June - July 1965, cat. no. 14 (verso exhibition label). In the present painting "Le Lad Blanc et ses Chevaux - The Stable Boy and His Horses", Alfred de Dreux depicts a quiet moment. He captures the relationship between man and horse, as in most of his famous equine paintings. The French painter was one of the best-known artists of the Paris Salon, a world-famous, regularly-held exhibition and the centre of the French art market in the 19th century. De Dreux was influenced by artists in his family from an early age, and later taught by Léon Cogniet. The young painter was particularly inspired by Théodore Géricault, who was a close family friend. He focused primarily on the depiction of horses after his training, often alongside commissioned portraits. He also regularly painted dogs – usually they accompanied the main subject, horses, but his oeuvre also contains dog-only portraits. He returned to Paris in 1852 following an extended stay in London, and worked for Emperor Napoleon III, of whom he produced magnificent equestrian portraits. In contrast, the present work shows a quiet moment; the simply dressed groom appears to be resting briefly with the two horses while dark clouds gather in the sky.

De Dreux h: 43,50 w: 65,50 cm Commentaire : Alfred De Dreux s'est rapidement imposé comme le spécialiste de la peinture de chevaux. Ses premiers succès relèvent de la mode du portrait équestre, dont notre artiste lui-même se proclamait le grand spécialiste de son temps. " Ma spécialité est de peindre les gens à cheval " s'écriait-il dès 1842. Ses portraits étaient alors particulièrement prisés par l'ensemble des personnalités mondaines de la bonne société parisienne. Il est alors de bon ton de se faire représenter à cheval. Il l'est encore plus lorsque le peintre s'appelle Alfred De Dreux. En parallèle de ses succès comme portraitiste, De Dreux s'amuse dans la représentation en tout genre du cheval. Durant la seconde partie de sa carrière, l'artiste décrit avec élan les mille variations de la vie de l'animal, marquant sa palette d'une esthétique particulière rendant ses toiles et sa manière rapidement identifiables. Cette passion l'amènera naturellement à s'intéresser aux courses hippiques, royaume des étalons, largement privilégiées par l'artiste. Dans tous ces tableaux, le cheval est le sujet, le jockey n'étant qu'un élément du décor. Ces derniers semblent statiques, sans émotions, neutres, alors que les bêtes, emplies de sentiments, frémissent, vibrent, volent presque comme le laissent suggérer les ombres et le mouvement des chevaux, en parfaite lévitation. Le mouvement du cheval suscita la polémique à la fin du XIXe siècle car plusieurs théories s'opposaient sur la capacité du cheval à décoller tous ses membres du sol lorsqu'il était au galop. A l'aide de douze appareils photographiques disposés le long d'une piste équestre, l'américain Eadweard Muybridge arriva à la conclusion que si les chevaux se retrouvaient bien quelques fractions de seconde en l'air à pleine vitesse, cette situation existe uniquement lorsque les membres de l'animal sont fermés, rendant la représentation de De Dreux absolument fantaisiste. Mais l'artiste n'est pas le scientifique, et la peinture n'est pas la photographie. Et si l'on peut légitimement penser qu'Alfred De Dreux n'eut pas besoin de la photographie pour connaitre la réalité des mouvements du cheval, il devait penser à raison que ce n'est pas à l'art de se soumettre à la science, mais plutôt à la science de se soumettre à l'art. Son of architect Pierre-Anne de Dreux and student of Théodore Géricault, Alfred de Dreux was immersed throughout his life in an artistic environment and gained renown as an equestrian and animal painter. Because of his privileged upbringing, he also befriended some of his most important patrons, such as the Duc d’Orléans, King Louis-Philippe or Emperor Napoléon III. Through his travels, de Dreux had a social advantage, notably with the English aristocracy, which gained him access to activities like horse-riding and fox hunting, scenes of which are repeatedly found in his works. In the following painting, de Dreux captured with loose brushstrokes the temperament of the dog and demonstrates his skill when representing animals in different poses.

Rare and unpublished discovery of mounted Ottoman warrior combines a profoundly Romantic vision with Alfred De Dreux's extraordinary talents as the leading equestrian artist of his generation. These are distilled into a highly charged and evocative image, which bears all the artist's hallmarks of movement, energy and color, but draws for further emotional effect upon a multitude of artistic, literary and historical influences. De Dreux was thus an extraordinarily versatile artist, who absorbed a multitude of influences and adapted them to a variety of genres. His horses are characterized by their shimmering coats, rendered in short, fine brushstrokes, which adds a sense of nervous energy and movement to the anatomical accuracy which defines their modelling. The overall impression is conveyed is a unique mixture of power and chic, rendered with a sense of bravura elan. This is one of De Dreux's most exciting compositions. This is one of several Orientalist pictures executed by the artist, this work is unusual in that rather than depicting the Nubian horsemen which typically characterize his paintings in this genre, the influence is primarily Ottoman. The painting harkens back thematically to Romantic works by Eugene Delacroix inspired by the Greek War of Independence and Byronic subjects such as the Giaour and Hassan.

Oil painting on canvas Alfred de Dreux is one of the first romantic painters of the eighteenth century. Born into a family of artists, his father was an architect who in 1815 won the Grand Prix de Rome for which the whole family moved to Rome where they could admire the ancient ruins. He met Theodore Gericault, who was one of his first masters and exhibited numerous times at the French National Salon in Paris. His production is characterized by noble portraits and on horseback including the Duke of Orleans, son of Louis Philippe of France.
