Elaine de Kooning W/C Italian Landscape, 1981

        Est: $8,000 - $10,000

Elaine Fried de Kooning (New York, 1919-1989) Abstract Expressionist watercolor painting on Fabriano paper depicting cliffs or a hillside covered in foliage rendered in shades of green and set beneath a blue sky. Likely created during the artist's trip to Italy in 1981. Signed "E de K" and dated "10/6/81" in pen, lower right. With Fabriano blindstamp, upper right. Additionally signed "Elaine de Kooning" and inscribed with address in pen to back of frame. Floated under glass in a wood frame with cream mat. Sheet: 18 13/16" H x 13 5/16" W. Frame: 26 1/16" H x 20 7/8" W. Provenance: The Estate of Sarah Gaunt, Signal Mountain, TN. Sarah Gaunt was a studio assistant to Willem de Kooning.  Artist biography: Elaine de Kooning studied art at the American Artists School and Leonardo da Vinci Art School in New York, and it was as an art student that she met fellow artist Willem de Kooning, whom she eventually married.  In the spring of 1948, the de Koonings were struggling to make ends meet. When an invitation came from Josef Albers to teach at his experimental program near Asheville, North Carolina, they jumped at the chance. The couple thrived at Black Mountain College, especially Elaine who took classes with Albers, Buckminster Fuller, and Merce Cunningham. She became an art writer for the influential magazine Art News in 1948. In her own work, de Kooning vacillated between complete abstraction and representational imagery. A respected portrait painter, she was at work on a commission of her most famous subject, President John F. Kennedy, at the time of his assassination in 1963. Although frequently overshadowed by her husband and their tumultuous relationship, she successfully gained recognition for herself. Her 1954 one-artist exhibition at the Stable Gallery was the first of over fifty solo and group exhibitions in the United States. She held numerous teaching positions; from 1957 to 1962 she was at the University of New Mexico, and later taught at the University of Georgia (as the Lamar Dodd Visiting Professor of Art), Carnegie Mellon Institute, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University graduate school. Elaine de Kooning’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Guggenheim Museum, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. (Source: The Johnson Collection).  PROVENANCE: The Estate of Sarah Gaunt, Signal Mountain, TN. Sarah Gaunt was a studio assistant to Willem de Kooning.

De Kooning (1918-1989) received a commission in 1962 to paint an official portrait of JFK for the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri. According to the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C., where there is an oil portrait from these sittings, "Elaine was an unorthodox choice for the task, not only because she was female, painting in the abstract expressionist style, and highly individualistic, but also because she had executed few commissioned works in her career. Her portraits were primarily of close friends in the art world and of family, including her husband, artist Willem de Kooning. But Elaine's skill at recording the essence of a subject in a few sittings won her the job. She traveled to Florida in late December 1962 to meet with the president in Palm Beach. After their sessions ended in January 1963, Elaine returned to her studio, using her studies and published photographs to refine the portrait. She was still working on it when she learned that Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas on November 22. It was months before she could return to the project and attempt to express the vitality of the man she met in Palm Beach." Of the sittings and capturing Kennedy's likeness, the artist noted, "All my sketches from life as he talked on the phone, jotted down notes, read papers, held conferences, had to be made very quickly, catching features and gestures, half for memory, even as I looked, because he never sat still. It was not so much that he seemed restless, rather, he sat like an athlete or college boy, constantly shifting in his chair. At first this impression of youthfulness was a hurdle, as was the fact that he never sat still."

        ELAINE DE KOONING Untitled.

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

ELAINE DE KOONING Untitled. Color screenprint on white wove paper, 1964-65. 515x614 mm; 20 1/2x24 1/4 inches (sheet), full margins. Intended edition of 200, though significantly fewer impressions have been found, indicating an unrealized edition. Signed and dated "65" in ink, lower right, and counter signed, dedicated and dated "73" in ink, lower right. Printed by Stephen Poleskie, Chiron Press, New York. Published by Tanglewood Press, New York. A superb impression with vibrant colors. According to the printer Poleskie, "At that time we were close friends and she (de Kooning) was one of the first to work with me in my print shop. I recently found some photographs of her in my studio, Chiron Press. Eddie (Johnson) was also a sculptor and a filmmaker. We collaborated on a movie called The Bird Film, which was widely shown back then at places like The Bridge Cinema in New York and the Yale Film Festival . . . Elaine de Kooning (1918-1989) was an associate producer, and many of the movie's scenes were shot on her farm at Livingston Manor in upstate New York. Eddie also took the photographs that appeared in Life magazine when Elaine painted her famous, or infamous, portrait of President John F. Kennedy. Elaine's screenprint was done from her "bulls" series. It was printed in six colors, and Elaine made all the stencils herself, with my help and supervision, using the tusche and glue technique. This process is quite time consuming, and few of the artists I worked with back then were willing to put in the effort required to make a print this way. Elaine and I made a lot of test prints and pulled proofs in many different color combinations. Elaine was a true painter at heart . . . [she] was one of the few artists that actually got her hands dirty making a print." A series of seven progressive proofs of this subject were sold at Swann, June 4, 2009, sale 2182, lot 252. One of the proofs was printed on a sheet over the image Seascape (I), screenprint printed in blue, 1964-65, by Roy Lichtenstein that was also printed at Chiron Press at the time (Corlett 36).
