William Alfred Delamotte, British 1775-1863- An old thatched house beside a path with two figures; pen, black ink, watercolour and bodycolour heightened with white on paper, 28.8 x 22.6 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, 22 October 1974, lot 52. Private Collection, UK. Note: Delamotte studied under Benjamin West (1738-1820), and like West, enjoyed the patronage of King George III. He was a prolific draughtsman, producing extensive sketches and watercolours throughout Europe, in addition to the many executed in Oxford where he spent much of his life. A number of Delamotte's drawings were made into woodcuts by Orlando Jewitt (1799-1869). The present work is a charming example of his work, depicting an idyllic, rustic setting, with the sun streaming in from the right. Little action disturbs the scene, with the artist only hinting at the toil of rural labour by means of the tools lying beside the cottage.

interesting bound collection of 32 small drawings and watercolors with a possible royal provenance, including works by William Alfred Delamotte (Br. 1775-1863), Etienne Bouhot (FR. 1780-1862) and William Paul (Ger. 19thC.) and many unidentified examples. A number of British caricatures are included, in the manner of George Cruikshank and W. M. Thackeray. The album with gilt tooled covers and brass clasp, titled Augusta with royal crown. 11 3/4" high, 9 1/2" wide overall. Covers detached, wear and losses to same. Pages chipped at edges, many blank and lacking a number of works previously mounted. Property of a European collector. Property of a Gentleman. Landscape with Fishermen. William Alfred Delamotte (1775-1863). Oil on canvas. In gilded frame. William Alfred Delamotte (Weymouth 1775 ? 1863 Oxford) was an English painter and engraver. Delamotte was the son of a French refugee. His remarkable drawing skills were apparent from an early age and he enjoyed the royal patronage of King George III. After having exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1793, he enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools the following year, becoming a student of Benjamin West, another of the King's protégés and the President of the Royal Academy. Even during these years of study, Delamotte chose to turn his attention to architectural and landscape work. From the Academy he moved to Oxford, depicting its buildings in numerous sketches. In 1803 he accepted the post of Drawing-Master at the newly established Royal Military College, Sandhurst, a position he held for forty years. Besides producing watercolours and a few oils, he turned to printmaking by way of etching, lithography and soft-ground etching. En 1793, à seulement 18 ans, il expose ses oeuvres à la Royal Academy et il entame sa formation à l'Ecole de l'Académie Royale l'année suivante. Formé par Benjamin West, grand peintre de scènes historiques et de style néoclassique, il jouit comme son maître du soutien du roi George III. However, Delamotte concentrates his art on architectural studies and landscapes rendered in watercolour tones that are perfectly reminiscent of the muted colours of the Swiss mountains.

Attributed to WILLIAM ALFRED DELAMOTTE ( 1775- 1863 ) A portrait of Rhûg, circa 1820, oil on canvas, re-lined, 15.75 in x 20.5 in, framed. The house, built in Grecian fashion in buff sandstone, was inherited by Edward Williames Vaughan, ( the second son of Robert Howell Vaughan, later 1st Baronet ) in 1780, at the age of just 13 from his cousin Maria Charlotte Pugh, granddaughter of Owen Salusbury, the last male heir of that line. He changed his name to Vaughan - Salusbury on 21st May 1791. On his death at Syracuse on 15th September 1807, it passed to his younger brother Griffith Howell Vaughan, and in turn on Griffith's death in 1848, to his nephew Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, 3rd Baronet. Attributed to WILLIAM ALFRED DELAMOTTE ( 1775 - 1863 ) A portrait of Nannau, circa 1820, oil on canvas, re-lined, 15.75 in x 20.5 in, framed. The house, the Nannau of Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, ( known affectionately as Yr Hen Syr Robert ) was commenced by his father Sir Robert Howell Vaughan 1st Baronet in 1788, and completed by his son in 1796. A square central block, with two perfectly proportioned wings, built of beautifully faced granite slabs - an example of Georgian architecture at it's best period. It seems to have been built around ' Old Nannau ' ; the outside walls of Colonel Nanney's house can be traced in the cellars, and part of his tower is still clearly visible. Sir Robert added a huge kitchen with spacious larders for his son's coming of age celebrations in 1824. Mary Vaughan. Nannau. Reprinted from the Journal of the Merioneth Historical and Record Society 1962. William Alfred Delamotte, a pupil of Benjamin West, enjoyed the patronage of King George III.
