Beauford Delaney 1901-1979 No. 6 Portrait, JFK 1963 pastel on paper 16 x 12-3/4 inches Signed and dated From LES AMIS DE BEAUFORD DELANEY, A BLOG THAT DESCRIBES THE EFFORTS OF A SMALL GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS TO PRESERVE THE FRENCH GRAVESITE, AND THE MEMORY, OF PAINTER BEAUFORD DELANEY (Dr. Monique Y. Wells): ... the news of President Kennedy’s assassination would weigh heavily on Beauford’s heart. In November 1963, Beauford received a letter from Larry, enclosed with one of his drawings. Beauford wrote back, saying: Dear Larry, You beautiful scene… arrived today along with your living message [.] It was as if you were here in person [.] I immediately placed it upon the wall where I can see it all the time [.] We here are all overwhelmed with the death of President Kennedy and life and work are temporarily suspended. However, I am delighted with your spirit… and it is present in your work. [image] No 6 Portrait, JFK Pastel © Estate of Beauford Delaney by permission of Derek L. Spratley, Esquire, Court Appointed Administrator When Beauford tells Larry that reading his message made it feel as though he was physically present, Beauford puts forwards something of great importance – the letter’s capacity to carry the soul of the writer within its pages. Receipt of Larry’s letter works against Beauford's self-alienation and alienation of the world. Though Kennedy’s death is a considerable loss, Beauford recognizes Larry’s art and his letter as a source of light during a dark time. For Beauford, both the practice of art and the practice of letter writing are passionate investments in the world and in other people.

        Est: $35,000 - $50,000

BEAUFORD DELANEY (1901 - 1979) Untitled. Gouache on illustration board, 1956. 724x540 mm; 28 1/2x21 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right. Provenance: private collection, Florida; thence by descent, private collection. Beauford Delaney made this beautiful gouache in his first Paris period of abstraction. When Delaney immigrated from New York to Paris in 1953, Delaney's painting shifted towards pure abstraction with his interest in color and light. In January of 1956, he also moved to 28 rue Paul Valliant in the Parisian suburb of Clamart where lived until the fall of 1960. Delaney worked on board in the mid-1950s for only a short time - his later gouache works are typically on paper. His masterful intertwining of layers of gouache reflects his growing freedom with vivid colors. He also began exhibiting with Galerie Paul Facchetti by the late 1950s.

BEAUFORD DELANEY PASTEL PORTRAIT OF A MAN

        Est: $10,000 - $12,000

Beauford Delaney (American/Tennessee, 1901-1979) pastel on wove paper bust-length portrait of a bearded man with vibrant blue eyes and piercing stare. Set against a mottled green background, the composition is enlivened by the artist's use of swirling linework to create a network of electric blue forms that seem to radiate from the sitter's eyes--accentuating his facial features and bust before spilling into the background. Along with the warm orange, pink, and yellow tones describing the sitter's skin, this blue is echoed subtly in the clothing and background through layers of applied color. Unsigned. Beauford Delaney Estate Stamp verso. Housed in a modern, rusticated gray wood frame with exposed gilt and white mat. Sheet: 25 1/2" H x 19 5/8" W. Frame: 31 3/4" H x 25 3/8" W. Courtesy credits: Case expresses appreciation to Derek Spratley (Administrator, Estate of Beauford Delaney) and Stephen Wicks (Barbara W. and Bernard E. Bernstein Curator of the Knoxville Museum of Art) on this Beauford Delaney pastel on paper. Note: The winning bidder will be given a signed document by Court Appointed Administrator, Derek Spratley, attesting this work is from the Beauford Delaney estate. Biography: Modernist artist Beauford Delaney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. An apprentice to artist Lloyd Branson, Delaney was encouraged by his mentor to study art in Boston. In 1929 he traveled to New York and established himself as a prominent artist of the Harlem Renaissance. There he gained the attention and admiration of well-known writers and artists such as James Baldwin, Georgia O'Keefe, Alfred Stieglitz, and many others. Delaney experimented throughout his career with a wide variety of styles, including his personal brands of realism, fauvism, post-impressionism, and abstract expressionism. His departure from New York to Paris in 1953 also marked his transition from figurative compositions to abstractions with a focus on color and light. Numerous portraits by Delaney, such as this pastel drawing, demonstrate the artist's fauvist tendencies in regard to his use of vibrant, non-local color for expressive effect. Additionally, the penetrating stare and psychological intensity of this pastel suggests the influence of modernist portraiture by luminaries like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse that the artist would have viewed in museums in Boston, New York, and Paris.

Watercolor on paper. Part of the Artists Abstract Watercolor Series. 15" by 17 1/2" framed. Born in 1901, Beauford Delaney, an expatriate African-American painter, spent his childhood and teen years in Knoxville, Tennessee. He studied at the Massachusetts Normal School in Boston, in 1924, moving to Harlem and other New York City locations in 1929. In 1953, he went permanently to live in France, mainly Paris. He died there on March 25, 1979. Among many intellectuals Delaney knew as a kindred soul, friend and mentor, were James Baldwin, then a young author, who became a lifelong friend. Writer Henry Miller introduced many people to Delaney in his essay The Amazing and Invariable Beauford Delaney. Early critics of Delaney's paintings lauded his wit and eye, yet tended to pigeon-hole him as a "Negro artist." A natural draughtsman, he went beyond the rendering of likeness to the search for feelings, states of mind and being, emotional temperatures. He worked in realistic and abstract modes, both characterized by Expressionist freedom of drawing, paint-handling and composition. Delaney's love of art and life carried him through many economic and spiritual crises. He suffered from alcoholism and its attendant problems. In the early 1960s, he was diagnosed by one psychiatrist as having paranoid delusions aggravated by alcohol. Regardless of this, Delaney was clearly a very sensitive person stressed by slow art sales, the departure of friends, and his own poor nutritional habits. These precipitated depression, followed by heavy drinking. Charley Boggs, a long-time friend of Delaney's, helped with financial support, lodging and friendship during times that were some of the least graceful in Delaney's life -- when his mind and body were falling apart. Some exhibition venues of Beauford Delaney's work include the Vendome Gallery, Roko Gallery and Artists' Gallery, New York City, in the 1940s; Gallerie Paul Fachetti, 1960; and Black Master, Studio Museum in Harlem, 1978. David Leeming, who knew Beauford Delaney, has written a recent biography of the artist, Amazing Grace: A Life of Beauford Delaney, Oxford University Press, 1998. Some reviews include the following:

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist's brother Joseph Delaney; private collection. This sensitive portrait is an early work by Beauford Delaney, made while he was living and working in Greenwich Village. He settled in the Village due to his ideals of integration and a bohemian lifestyle that he saw fit for himself. Delaney painted portraits of friends, supporters, and public figures relevant to him. His social consciousness led him to portray his friends and associates with all racial and sexual backgrounds. He depicted both black and white people, and the hetero-normative and queer residents of the Village. Delaney lived a romantically solitary life as he chose not to express his underlying sexuality due to his strict religious upbringing and the politics of the era.

Provenance: the estate of the artist, Derek L. Spratley court appointed administrator, with estate ink stamp verso; private collection, New York. Beauford Delaney made this beautiful work on paper during the height of his Parisian abstract period. Delaney's masterful intertwining of layers of paint reflects his growing bold expression with color during his period exhibiting with Galerie Paul Facchetti. Delaney began working in oil on paper in the late 1950s, and a number of these large works of oil on paper by Beauford Delaney were in the artist's estate. This mid-career abstraction is his largest work on paper to come to auction.

Henry Miller
