Tamara DeLempicka Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

Tamara de Lempicka's prints epitomize the Art Deco movement in portraiture from 1920 to 1940. Artist Tamara de Lempicka was an integral part of high-society Paris during this period, painting portraits of famous writers, artists, and thinkers, as well as leading industrialists and exiled nobility who brought her much wealth.

The best-known Tamara de Lempicka prints of figuratives and portraits include those that portray sensual, sometimes nude females, in bold, vibrant tonality — glossy ruby lips, golden or black metallic tresses, or stark alabaster flesh. Each has sharp, angular features combined with ample fleshy contours, presented in highly contrasted light and shadows. Tamara DeLempicka art for sale includes portrait prints in her glamorous Art Deco style. You can find other portrait prints for sale at Invaluable when searching for your next family heirloom.

"Tête de Femme" is one of those wonderful portraits Tamara produced in the interwar period that constitute her most important and recognisable work. Executed in pencil, it demonstrates Tamara de Lempicka's technical skill and unique style of drawing to convey subtle emotions with a few lines and shading. As is usual in many of her drawings and paintings, the composition is occupied by a young half-length female figure shown in a contrapposto clearly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci's "Leda and the Swan", which gives her movement, beauty and elegance. The head, much more elaborate than the rest of the body, shows beautiful and sensual features, but at the same time cold and distant due to the marked features and the strong chiaroscuro. The young woman in the portrait looks at us from the bottom up, as was typical of fashion images of the time, knowing that she is beautiful and seductive, yet at the same time unattainable. Tamara de Lempicka once said that all her portraits had something of herself in them. Tamara de Lempicka, originally Maria Gurwik-Górska, was born according to her biography in 1898 in Warsaw into a wealthy family, although it is thought that she may have been born in Russia years before that. Her first great contact with art came from her grandmother, who took her on a trip around Europe to see the most important museums, and she was captivated by the Great Masters of the Renaissance, who had a great influence on her work. In 1916 she married the Polish lawyer Tadeusz ?empicki (1888-1951) in St. Petersburg, with whom she led a luxurious life until the outbreak of the October Revolution and Tadeusz's imprisonment. Most of her aristocratic friends fled to Europe, including her own relatives, but she remained until she managed to free Tadeusz through the intercession of the Swedish consul. Once freed, the family, after a brief stay in the Nordic countries, settled in Paris. The first years in Paris were very hard. Like so many other members of the Russian upper class and nobility who had to flee after the Revolution, Tamara's family lived meagrely on the sale of the few jewels they managed to take with them and the help of friends. Tadeusz, depressed, did not work, and Tamara, mother of a small child, found herself in need of something to do for herself. Encouraged by her sister Adrienne, Tamara began to study painting at the Academie de la Grande Chaumière, where the courses were free. She then studied with Maurice Denis and later with André Lhote. From Maurice Denis he learned technique by copying the classics until he became familiar with each technique and genre and was able to use all the sfumato and tonalities of a colour. He also learned to simplify lines and colours in order to better define shapes and give them a greater decorative charge for the benefit of beauty. From André Lhote he learned Cubism applied to traditional themes and to subject the sensuality of the human body to geometric and decorative disintegration.

Reina del Art Déco, Palacio de Gaviria, 5 October 2018 – 5 May 2019 Literature: A. Blondel, Tamara de Lempicka, catalogue raisonné 1921–1979, Acatos, Lausanne 1999, no. B 301, p. 359 with ill. (with wrong dimension) Tamara de Lempicka, the prominent exponent of Art Deco painting in the 1920s, combined dis-parate elements of her early oeuvre into her later work as illustrated by her "Chambre d'Hôtel” Tamara de Lempicka is considered one of the most successful women in art history. After the October Revolution, the Polish-born artist fled from St. Petersburg to Paris, where her rise to fame took off. De Lempicka frequented the cafés of the French capital, where she met numerous personalities such as Georges Braque and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Her paintings have a strong visual impact, characterised by deconstructed, volumetric forms in which the influences of naturalistic cubism and the harmony of Italian Mannerism shine through. Much of her work depicts portraits of personalities who populated the salons she frequented. The sitters bear real features and are at the same time symbolic figures, elegant and adorned with the wealth of the beautiful society in which they lived. The artist's many self-portraits also testify to her joyful response to life and pleasure. The cool, smooth painting style evokes theatricality, the sitters appear sculptural and monumental, the petrified gaze hides any hint of humanity. After travelling in America and years of success, de Lempicka experienced what she herself called an "artist's depression". The constant pressure to produce something and to meet the expectations of those around her led to the exhaustion and draining of her creativity. From about 1930 onwards, de Lempicka took a different path, her work beginning to take on a more meditative, almost religious character. Her technique also approached a hyperrealist and surrealist model, as can be seen in the painting "Chambre d'Hôtel" from 1951, which was created in America, where de Lempicka found a new home after fleeing from the Nazis: The study of a room presents itself as simultaneously quiet and deafeningly loud. There are no faces, as in her earlier works, but there is space for a less constructed structure, less broken in form, but much more rigid in its visual effect. One sees a section of a hotel room in which a mirror further enlarges the space and creates a kind of passageway within it. The composition is more thoughtful, almost narrative, no longer smothered by the frame but continuing and foreshadowing the wider context.
