Louis Delsarte Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1944 - d. 2020

Louis J. Delsarte (September 1, 1944 – May 2, 2020) was an African-American artist known for what has sometimes been called his "illusionistic"[1] style. He was a painter, muralist, printmaker, and illustrator.

When Delsarte was growing up, he was surrounded by music including jazz, opera, musicals, and the blues. From this experience, as well as from his knowledge of African history and culture, he has drawn much of the inspiration for his art. Delsarte was a professor of Fine Arts at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. For the past 13 years his work has been exhibited around the United States.

Born in Brooklyn, Delsarte went to high school in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY, received a Certificate in Fine Arts Education from Brooklyn College, earned his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at New York's Pratt Institute, and obtained a master's degree in Fine Arts at the University of Arizona.

Delsarte's work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at museums, galleries, and other venues throughout the United States, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York, the Bodley Gallery (also in New York), the California Afro-American Museum, the Camille Hanks Cosby Museum at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Howard University fine arts gallery. In 2001, Delsarte's work was included as part of a national traveling exhibition entitled "When the Spirit Moves: African-American Dance in History and Art". The traveling exhibition was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, having originated as a 1999-2000 exhibition at Spelman College (entitled "When the Spirit Moves: African American Art Inspired by Dance".[2]

In 2001, Delsarte completed a large public mural commissioned by the city of New York. The monumental work, entitled "Transitions", is located at the Church Avenue station, on the Brooklyn IRT line.[3]

Delsarte received further national recognition in August 2005 when the United States Postal Service issued a stamp featuring a Delsarte painting. The stamp depicts the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, taken from a Delsarte painting created in 2000.

Also in 2005, Delsarte completed another monumental public mural, this one entitled "Spirit of Harlem". The 30 ft X 11 ft glass mosaic was assembled in Munich, Germany, and is located at North Fork Bank on 125th Street in New York City.[citation needed]

In January 2010, Delsarte's 125-foot-long Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Mural was dedicated at Peace Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia.[4]

Significant critical recognition of Delsarte's contribution to American art has included discussion of his work in Samella Lewis's African American Art & Artists: a history of African American art from the seventeenth-century to the 1990s[5]

His painting "Greenwood Lake", inspired by summers spent at Greenwood Forest Farms, where Langston Hughes also lived for a time, was made into an oversized 6'6" square panel for inclusion in the Greenwood Lake Mural Project by curator Melanie Gold. It can be viewed by the general public at 673 Jersey Ave in Greenwood Lake, NY. The project also includes works by other artists, and was featured in a New York Times article[6]

Louis Delsarte 1944-2020 Penny Pastel and acrylic on acid free paper c. 1990s Signed and titled. Delsarte grew up in Brooklyn and attended the Pratt Institute (BFA) and also the University of Arizona in Tucson (MFA). He also taught art throughout his career, including at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Delsarte was influenced by jazz music and has attempted to represent its spontaneity and rhythm in his work. He was also commissioned to execute several important mural projects in cities throughout the country. His technique is instantly recognizable. His colorful compositions are intentionally flattened and his brushwork causes a “surface tension” that is reminiscent of a reflection of the scene being viewed in choppy water. The figures and even the inanimate objects are buzzing with energy. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries throughout the United States including the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. In 2001, his work was chosen as part of the exhibition, When the Spirit Moves: African American Dance in History and Art. Unity is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This article appeared in the NY Times announcing his passing earlier this year: 12 x 9 inches

Artist: Louis Delsarte Title: Untitled Year: Undated Dimensions: 12in. by 9in. Medium: Mixed media on paper Condition: Excellent Signature Details: Hand signed by the artist in acrylic, lower right Other Details: Archivally framed ARTIST BIO: Louis Delsarte is a figurative artist whose work reflects a departure from the realist style that was predominant among many of the African-American artists during the first half of the twentieth century. His multi-layered works have been described as illusionistic and myth-like, often crossing over into the world of abstraction. Delsartes work is in the permanent collection of The Studio Museum in Harlem and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His work has also been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and Europe, including the Schomberg Center in New York and the Howard University Fine Arts Gallery. In 2002 his most public work could be viewed at the Church Avenue subway station in Brooklyn, where his colorful 120 foot mosaic tile mural, Transitions, could be admired by commuters riding on the D and Q lines. In 2001 Delsartes work was chosen to be included in the traveling exhibit, When the Spirit Moves: African-American Dance in History and Art. The last stop for the national tour was the Smithsonians Arts and Industries Building. Demonstrating the roots and evolution of African-American dance forms, the exhibit included a visual arts section, African American Art Inspired by Dance, which was curated by art historian Samella Lewis. Commenting on the artists, Lewis said, "Some are or have been dancers themselves, while others have a history of being motivated by the moods and movements associated with dance. Through time and artistic production each of these artists has demonstrated a devotion to both the physical and spiritual aspects of the dance." Other artists featured in this exhibit included Romare Bearden, Howardina Pindell, Palmer Hayden, Archibald Motley, and Elizabeth Catlett. Delsarte was born in Brooklyn on September 1, 1944. He grew up and went to school in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. He attended New York University, were he earned his BFA in 1967. Ten years later, in 1977, Delsarte received his MFA from the University of Arizona. He is currently a tenured Professor of Art & Humanities at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA
