Edwin Willard Deming (1860 - 1942) Watercolor on Paper, Signed Lower Right, Measures (5 x 8.5 inches) w/frame (12 x 16.5 inches) Born in Ashland, Ohio, Edwin Deming was an early illustrator and painter of the American West where he traveled among several Indian tribes. He had grown up with Sac, Fox, and Winnebago playmates in western Illinois and later lived among Indians for thirty-one years. He was committed to depicting the unspoiled Indian, a mission he perceived as trying to make amends for corrupting their culture. It was said that "No painter knew more about the American Indian--his life, culture, and religion" When he was a teenager, he traveled West by train and stagecoach to sketch the Indian territory, but his parents, intent on "practical" pursuits, sent him to Chicago to study business law. However, he determined to be an artist, so he sold all his possessions to earn money and enrolled at the Art Students League in New York City. He also studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris for a year with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre.

Edwin Willard Deming (American, 1860 - 1942) African Woman Sitting Bronze Statue Dated 1911

              Est: -

Signed and dated in the bronze: E.W. Deming 1911. Edwin Willard Deming (1860-1942) grew up on a former tract of Indian reservation land in Geneseo, Illinois. His youthful observations of Native American life, formed the basis of his work, painting, sculpture, illustrations and writings. He studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Academie Julian in Paris, returning to the United States in 1885. Deming quickly established a pattern that he maintained throughout his career: he traveled west to Indian lands in the summers, returning to his studio in New York with sketches, photographs and notes that he translated into paintings and sculptures during the winters. Among his expeditions were visits to the Apache and Pueblo tribes of the Southwest and the Umatillas of Oregon in 1887 and the Crow in Montana and Wyoming. Deming became an honorary member of the Blackfoot tribe in 1898. Deming used his talents to depict accurately vanishing tribal customs and beliefs. His most ambitious effort was the set of murals (1914-1916) depicting the principal Indian nations at the entrance of the Plains Indian Hall at the American Museum of Natural History, New York. In 1887, he made the first of many trips to the Southwest to paint the Apache and Pueblo. he painter won a medal at the St. Louis Universal Exposition in 1904. Deming also exhibited at the National Academy of Design (1890-95), at the Pennsylvania Academy (1895, 1905, 1911), at the Corcoran biennial (1908) and at the Art Institute of Chicago (1916). Also that year, he painted murals of Indian life for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
