Notre artiste se distingue au sein de ce groupe par de nombreuses compositions mettant en scène familles et enfants à la plage, se baignant ou jouant sur le sable. Notre tableau s'inscrit précisément dans cette production si caractéristique chez notre artiste. Elle nous offre ici le moment simple et ravissant d'une enfant sortant de l'eau pour reprendre les vêtements qu'elle avait laissé sur un rocher le temps de sa baignade. Une esquisse pour notre tableau concentrée sur le visage de la jeune fille et peinte sur panneau, est récemment passée sur le marché de l'art (voir vente anonyme ; Toulouse, Primardeco, 27 septembre 2024, n° 11). Il y a un parti pris d’avance contre l’art de la femme”. Ainsi s’exprime Virginie Demont-Bretondans son article paru en 1896, intitulé La Femme dans l’art, souhaitant l’émancipation intellectuelle et artistique des femmes. Ces réflexions représentent sans doute le prolon gement des premiers enseignements reçus par la jeune Virginie au sein de son foyer familial, une lignée d’artistes comprenant des femmes et accueillant avec bienveillance leur aspira tion à une carrière artistique autonome. Si sa mère Élodie se réjouit en 1867 de la qualité de ses premiers croquis, les tableaux peints par Jules Breton matérialisent en parallèle la vision d’une féminité digne et puissante. En effet, en cette seconde moitié de siècle, le fait qu’une femme puisse s’adonner aux arts n’était pas un phénomène insolite, car ces activités s’inscrivaient dans les travaux d’agrément des jeunes bourgeoises. Toutefois, contrairement au cas de Virginie Demont-Breton, cet appren tissage n’aboutissait souvent pas à une pro fessionnalisation dans le champ artistique, ces velléités demeurant cantonnées aux genres mineurs et au dilettantisme. Définie par ses contemporains comme “une féministe qui savait rester femmes”, Virginie Demont-Breton adhère à une conception harmonique de l’art et de la féminité, reflétant par certains aspects le féminisme bourgeois et familial qui va prendre pied en France pendant les années 1890 : “La peinture n’a rien d’incompatible avec le devoir filial et maternel”. Des idées explicitées dans ses toiles, à travers l’image de femmes aux canons statuaires personnifiant les piliers de l’équilibre familial (Femme de pêcheur venant de baigner ses enfants, Le Bain, L’homme est en mer); de jeux d’enfants (Dans l’air pur; Les Méduses bleues, Les Petits Goélands); ou de la maternité idéale (Le Messie, Alma Mater, L’Étoile du matin). » Roberta Serra, « L’union des femmes peintres et sculpteurs, La présidencede Virginie Demont-Breton », in. This work will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné that is being prepared by Annette Bourrut Lacouture. This work is a study for the finished work Virginie Demont-Breton submitted to the Salon de la Societé des Artistes Français in 1896. Demont-Breton was the daughter of the French artist Jules Breton. According to Annette Bourrut Lacouture: This lovely panel is a sketch - very closed - for Le colombier d'Isa (1896), Salon de la Société des Artistes Français de (1896), n°627 (Current whereabouts unknown). Virginie Demont-Breton realized this "colombier" which was not far from her House, a great part of the Year, in the surroundings of Wissant (Pas de Calais), a Fishing Village face to Dover and Folkstone. The owner was a peasant girl, but for the model, Virginie used her two daughters Louise (1886-1921) et Adrienne (1888-1935) (By the way who became a painter too). There is a good black and white reproduction of the Salon Painting in the Panorama Salon, Paris 1896. In my Catalogue raisonné, the title will be "Le colombier d'Isa" as it is in the Catalogue of the Salon. HID04901242017

This picturesque region brought back memories of her youthful sojourns in the years between 1865 and 1873 to the Douarnenez bay with her father, painter Jules Breton and her family. Demont-Breton's painting upholds the spirit of her father's vision of rural life - that of an idyllic, pre-industrial world, where man was at harmony with nature. Femme de Pecheur is also a paean to the wholesomeness and nobility of the peasantry. The female figure is maternal, protective, and strong. Indeed, she is of monumental scale, imbued with an almost heroic stature as she balances two children in her arms while crossing a rocky beach, her feet clinging to the slippery, mossy stones. Demont-Breton has combined elements of the rural realist style with the more iconic elements of the Old Master tradition to portray a modern-day Madonna and Child.
