    Thomas Derrick (British, 1885-1954) Portrait of Mrs John Mavrogordato signed upper right "Thomas Derrick 1920" tempera on panel h:37 w:30 cm Provenance: The Mavrogordato family and by descent from the sitter. Literature: Colour magazine, Vol. 14, No. 1, February 1921. illus. as "Donna Cristina" - tempera, 15 x 11.5in. Other Notes: We are delighted that the finished portrait of Mrs Mavrogordato, for which the preliminary sketch was sold by Cheffins in these Rooms, March 2010, has now come to light, and is included in this sale. It is interesting to note that Derrick changed the background to blue, but otherwise his original ideas from the sketch remain the same. Thomas Derrick absorbed the influences of Arts and Crafts whilst a student at the Royal College of Art. His tutor there was William Lethaby, then Professor of Design, and the calligrapher Edward Johnston. Thomas Derrick later taught at the Royal College of Art and in the 1920s produced wonderful posters for the Tube and for the 1924 British Empire Exhibition, on which he collaborated with Edward Bawden. Christine Mavrogordato was the wife of literary figure John Mavrogordato, from the prominent Greek family, and a descendant of Byron's friend, Prince Mavrogordato. John Mavrogordato illustrated books by Chesterton, Belloc and Farjeon, and he and his wife moved in the highest literary and artistic circles of the day.

He trained at the Royal College of Art where he later became an instructor in the Decorative Arts. Derrick was a painter, illustrator, stained glass designer and designer for London Underground posters. He married Margaret Clausen, the daughter of Sir George Clausen, the artist.
