JIMMY DESANA (1949-1990) Television, from the series Submission. Throughout his career, DeSana produced imagery informed by and exploring S&M culture, often using both his own body as subject (most notably an infamous self-portrait as a hanged man). While other artists also used S&M imagery in their work, DeSana's imagery interrogated the intersection of the body, desire, and sexuality alongside consumer and suburban culture in new ways that were both witty and playful as well as dramatic and tension filled. In the late 1970s, DeSana collaborated with a dominatrix named Terence Sellers, photographing her practicing S&M with consenting clients. However, while the images made with Sellers were collaborative in nature, in his series "Submission" DeSana here took the theme to new realms, choosing to compose his images in a heightened theatrical and performative mode, using posed and sometimes contorted bodies. He positioned his figures within suburban environments, a theme taken up and developed throughout his career, and titled the works to reflect the setting, rather than the sex act depicted. DeSana's examination of S&M culture considers the relationship between domestic interiors and desire as well as the tension inherent in the practice, "the paradox of wanting and not wanting," as William Burroughs wrote in his introduction to Submission. Cibachrome prints, the images measuring approximately 375x483 mm; 14 3/4x19 inches, the sheets slightly larger, each with a blind stamp "JIMMY DESANA" on recto, and an edition number 9/28 or 2/28 (the first image) in pencil on verso. 1979-82; printed 1982. Like Enema, DeSana's "Suburban" series examines S&M culture alongside traditional suburban culture, equating everyday life with bondage in witty and humorous ways. Here the figures are lit with tungsten lights and bright, nearly garish, gels, and are depicted further stripped of identity (while the figures in "Submission" were often masked, here the figures' heads are often completely obscured or submerged). The increasing ambiguity of bodies in DeSana's images can be found not only in terms of identification but also in sexuality. DeSana said, "I think of the body almost as an object...I attempted to use the body but without the eroticism that some photographers use frequently...The body was treated almost as a prop and used with objects." Made at a time when color photography was only just beginning to be considered within fine art spaces, DeSana's use of bright color printed as glossy Cibachrome prints explicitly ties the work to consumerism and advertisements, in a visual language unambiguously and purposefully new and distinctive. [PHOTOBOOK] DESANA, JIMMY (1950-1990) 101 Nudes. The cardboard sheet at the rear reads "Edition 50. Offset 1972" with DeSana's stamp. 11 x 15 1/2 inches (28 X 39 cm); title leaf and 45 [perhaps of 56, though plate counts undoubtedly varied considerably] separate offset printed plates, each with DeSana's stamp on the rear. Slight crease to the cardboard justification leaf, generally an attractive copy. The very rare original edition of this legendary photobook, shot by a key figure in the East Village punk scene of the 1970s.
