The drawing of a lobster has some light foxing starting to emerge and there are some dirty marks to the reverse of the glazing, however the work itself does not appear to be affected. The drawing of a fish has heavier foxing, please refer to illustration. Not viewed out of glazed frames.

Note: Charles Maurice, known as Maurice, and his twin brother Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957), were artistic child prodigies, who, at the age of thirteen, became the youngest artists to exhibit at the Royal Academy, London. Their work exhibits the influence of the Japanese woodblock prints collected by their uncle and guardian, Dr Edward Barton Shuldham (1837-1924), who also encouraged their interest in natural history, and in the depiction of animals and plants. ‘The Jungle Book’ was first published in book form in London in 1894 by Macmillan. This original edition collected stories that Kipling had previously published in magazines in 1893-4, and included illustrations from the author's father amongst other artists. In 1903, Macmillan published a volume of ‘Sixteen Illustrations of Subjects from Kipling's "Jungle Book"' as a standalone portfolio with the plates mounted on card (see literature). This portfolio helped establish the twins’ reputation and was separate from the continuous text of Kiping’s book. The Detmold twins were just eighteen when they received this commission to produce sixteen watercolour illustrations, of which only five are known to have survived today: ‘Kaa the Python’ [Natural History Museum]; ‘The Return of the Buffalo Herd’ [National Trust NT 761881]; 'Baloo in the Forest' [National Trust]; ‘The Monkey Fight’ [Private Collection, Exhibited at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, 2007]; and one further unnamed work in a private collection. This and the following lot are therefore lot highly important rediscoveries to add to this number. In 1908, the first standard printed edition of ‘The Jungle Book’ incorporating the Detmold illustrations within the book format (bound with text) was published by Macmillan. This edition contained the 16 plates and a frontispiece illustrated by the Detmold twins. The twins’ imagery was hugely significant and fundamentally shaped the public image of Kipling’s characters and settings until Disney’s 1967 animation created a new visual tradition. Maurice's career was tragically cut short by his suicide at the age of 24, in 1908, leaving his brother Edward Julius to work alone, who went on to produce illustrations for publications including 'The Fables of Aesop' in 1909 and 'Arabian Nights' in 1924. Edward Julius withdrew completely from public life towards the end of his career, and committed suicide in 1957, at the age of 73. On 19 July 1977, Christie’s London sold off 16 original watercolour drawings by the Detmold brothers from the property of the late Mrs Nora E. M. Joy, the artists’ sister, including ‘The Return of the Buffalo Herd’. The present work was not amongst these and its whereabouts at this point are unknown. The 'Cold Lairs' is an abandoned city of temples and ancient ruins located in the Indian jungle which is home to the 'Bandar-log', the monkeys of the Seeonee jungle, and which is feared by the other animals as an overgrown and dangerous place. The quote which accompanies the present work is from the story of 'Kaa's Hunting', in which Mowgli is kidnapped by the Bandar-log and taken to the Cold Lairs. To save him, Bagheera and Baloo seek the help of the giant python Kaa, who is dreaded by the Bandar-log, and who confronts the Bandar-log to secure Mowgli's release. We are grateful to Iain MacPhail for confirming the attribution of the present lot.

Edward and Maurice Detmold, twin brothers, were talented illustrators by the age of 13, From the age of five both boys showed an interest in drawing animals at London zoo and spent six months studying drawing at the Hampstead Conservatoire. Precociously talented, they first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the age of thirteen, attracting the attention of Edward Burne-Jones, (NPG 3037). Their work was dedicated to the masterful illumination of animals in particular, and became highly sought after in Edwardian society. Many of their illustrations reflect influence from Japanese art, Albrecht Dürer, and the Art Nouveau movement. "The end result of this incongruous joining together of the quasi-scientific and the ornamental is an image which is both fanciful and often rather disturbing." (Diana Johnson, RISD: Fantastic Illustration and Design in Great Britain, 1850-1930). Edward and Maurice published the plates for Kiplings The Jungle Book in 1903 when they were twenty years old, five years before the illustrations were resized and published with the text. Dark and bold, with beautifully defined characters set in elegant yet wild environments, these plates best represent the influence of Dürers striking woodcuts on the Detmold brothers art. From a review published in the 1904 issue of the magazine The Studio, Their study of natural history enabled the clever young artists to choose without difficulty a number of subjects especially well-suited to their powers of illustration, and the decorative treatment of the various animals and reptiles, as well as of the figure of Mowgli himself, displays skillful and sound draughtsmanship. This was to be their last project together, as Maurice committed suicide in 1908. Edward continued to paint and print illustrations for hugely successful books such as The Fables of Aesop (1909) and Maeterlinck's The Life of the Bee (1911). In 1957, due to a depression that set in after two world wars, Edward took his life and followed Maurice in death.
