    Circle of Arthur Devis (1712-1787)

    Est: £2,500 - £3,500

Circle of Arthur Devis (1712-1787) Portrait of Sir Peter and Lady Dennis, full-length, in a wooded landscape, a sleeping pug at his feet, a man-of-war offshore and a castle in the distance a label verso is inscribed 'Sir Peter and Lady Dennis/He commanded the yacht/which conveyed the princess/of Mecklenburg-Strelitz/Bride of George 3rd of/England', oil on canvas 56 x 63cm Provenance: Rosa Frances Johnson. Condition Report: Framed: 71 x 78cm The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which has been lined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. There is some minor wear and abrasion in the thinly painted, darker areas of the picture which would be expected of a painting of this age. Areas of retouching are evident across the surface covering wear, age cracks and in some areas reinforcing the composition. The retouching is finely handled and well matched the original. The varnish has yellowed with age and is slightly dull but acceptable. A layer of surface dirt is adding to the matte appearance of the surface.

    Est: $30,000 - $50,000

DEVIS, Arthur (British 1712-1787) The Brydges Children, Boy with Cricket Bat, Girl with Basket of Flowers, mid 18th Century. Oil on Canvas 126x100cm (sight - front) PROVENANCE: Charles Holmes Harrison; John Egerton Harrison, nephew of the above, bequeathed in 1918 as "the picture of the Brydges children (the boy with the curved cricket bat and his sister)"; Mrs Daintry Frances Tremearne (née Harrison), wife of Dr John Tremearne, Creswick, Victoria; Margaret Harrison, Sydney. OTHER NOTES: The shape of the cricket bat dates to around 1740s-70s. The coat of arms suggests a union on the male side of Brydges and Egerton; and on the female side, Fairfowl. The exact identity of the children has not been established, however Edward Brydges (1712-1780) was thought to have been married to Jemima Egerton (1726-1770) which perhaps provides a partial answer to the paternal line. A daughter of Edward and Jemma, Charlotte (1766-1849) married Champion Branfill (1764-1792); and it is through Branfill, then by marriage, Harrison, line that the painting has come down to the present owners.

Oil on canvas 75 x 63cm. (29 1/2 x 24 3/4in.) Provenance: Clifton Family, Lytham Hall Rutland Gallery, London Acquired from the above by the current owner in 1972 Exhibited: Preston, Harris Art Gallery, ' Pictures from Lytham Hall' , December 1955-January 1956 Literature: D'Oench, Ellen G., The Conversation Piece: Arthur Devis & His Contemporaries , p.86, no. 113. An inscription on the reverse of this work describes the child as the granddaughter of the sitter. However, since Molyneux had no children, the child depicted is generally considered to be the sitter's great-niece Eleanora, or possibly, judging from the child's position, a male descendent. There is at least one record of Molyneux visiting Devis' shop in Preston, where the account book recorded a payment of £2/1/9 'for paper' on 14 April 1744.
