This work relates to a composition by Lorenzo di Credi in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. NG593). Another version by the artist is conserved in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City (inv. no. MV. 40340.0.0). Lorenzo di Credi was among the most prolific painters active in Florence between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Trained in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio alongside figures such as Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli, he was later entrusted with the inheritance of the master's bottega. He collaborated on the celebrated Baptism of Christ (Uffizi Galleries, inv. no. 8358), executing the angel beside Leonardo's, and maintained throughout his career a close artistic dialogue with the latter, often drawing inspiration from his compositions. Credi's works of the 1480s are distinguished by their refined execution, brilliant palette, and meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of accessories and landscape elements. This elegant and highly finished manner is exemplified by the present painting and the Madonna and Child in the Galleria Sabauda (inv. no. 170) and the refined compositions conserved in Florence, conceived to impress through their formal beauty and technical finesse. Towards the end of the 15th century, like many Florentine artists, Credi came under the influence of Girolamo Savonarola. From this moment, his paintings assumed a more restrained and devout character, while retaining a sensitivity to naturalistic detail. This spiritual orientation aligned him with the artistic ideals promoted by Fra Bartolomeo and Mariotto Albertinelli at the convent of San Marco, resulting in increasingly simplified compositions imbued with a heightened devotional intensity. The present Madonna and Child revisits one of the artist's most successful and enduring themes, that of the Virgo lactans. The composition is closely related to two other versions by the artist, among which the example in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City appears particularly close in conception and spirit. A further, earlier treatment of the subject is conserved in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. NG593). As noted by Alessandro Nesi, this painting belongs to Credi's mature 16th-century production, characterized by a softened palette and a deliberately clear, balanced composition. Yet, in the serene beauty of the Virgin's face and the natural ease with which the figures are arranged, the painter's enduring refinement and sensitivity remain fully apparent.

    In 1928, the art dealer Dante Virgil Leland advertised the present Madonna painting as a work by Lorenzo di Credi. The attribution, one reads there, was confirmed by Dr Heinrich Bodmer. Bodmer, then director of the International Institute for Art History in Florence, was not only an expert on Florentine Renaissance painting, he had also written his dissertation on Lorenzo di Credi. The delicately contoured face of the Madonna and the round, lively child are in the tradition of the pupils of Filippo Lippi and Andrea Verrocchio, above all Raffaelino del Garbo (1459-1537) and Lorenzo di Credi (1459-1537). There are striking parallels between our painting and Lorenzo di Credi's ‘Madonna dell'Latte’ from the Vatican Pinacoteca, as well as with a ‘Madonna’ in private ownership that was auctioned in 1957 (photo Fondazione Zeri). In all three pictures, the crossed legs of the well-nourished child are striking. Nevertheless, our painting is labelled in the Fondzione Zeri as a work by a follower of Lorenzo die Credi (seguace). After decades in private ownership, the uncleaned but well-preserved work has reappeared and can now once again come to the attention of art historical research.
