V. Diaz de la Pena actuellement en préparation par Rolande Miquel et Michael T. Klaa. Note de l'expert, Michael T.Klaa : Au cours du XIXe les Bacchantes triomphent à l’opéra, au théâtre, enivrent écrivains, sculpteurs et peintres. « Dans de somptueuses demeures leur image sourit du haut des plafonds peints, des couronnes de feuilles de vigne ombragent leurs beaux fronts … » (Préface Modèles d’Artistes, Ferdinand Bac). Diaz a réalisé des œuvres murales de grandes dimensions pour orner les demeures de riches clients dont celles de Salomon ou James de Rothschild, propriétaire du prestigieux vignoble Domaine Château Lafite. Le châssis porte la marque au fer, « Momper à Paris ». Ce dernier, installé 11 rue des Marais St. Germain (actuelle rue Visconti Paris 6e), était « restaurateur et rentoileur des musées impériaux » ce qui autorise à supposer qu’il fut l’auteur des opérations du retrait de cette œuvre et de son rentoilage. La construction pyramidale, n’est pas sans rappeler le tableau Dolce Farniente, sauvé de l’incendie du Palais des Tuileries. Diaz choisit de représenter la fin d’une bacchanale. Il dégage de cette œuvre une sensualité certes débordante mais pour reprendre le mot de P. et R. Miquel, élégante (monographie Diaz p. 65). Dans un décor fantastique des bacchantes se sont regroupées contre un arbre au tronc imposant ; Ce faisant, Diaz nous rappelle que c’est sous la forme d’un arbre que le Dieu était précédemment vénéré. Il était alors celui de la fertilité et de la végétation. Un tympana, tambour de basque posé au sol indique que la musique s’est tue (Malgré son nom, aucun lien ne le lie au Pays basque). Les danses, le vin, la mania, transe sensuelle instillée par le dieu ont conduit à l’assoupissement de plusieurs bacchantes/ménades. Narcisse Díaz de la Peña was a French painter of Spanish origin, associated with the Barbizon School, known above all for his landscapes of the forest of Fontainebleau, characterized by a loose brushstroke, intense colors and a strong sense of light and atmosphere as the one we now bid. Largely self-taught and marked by a physical disability since childhood, Narcisse Diaz also cultivated orientalist themes and scenes with figures. He was commercially successful during his lifetime and played an important role in the transition from Romantic landscape painting to a freer painting that influenced the development of Impressionism.

NARCISSE-VIRGILE DIAZ de la PEÑA (Bordeaux, 1807 - Menton, 1876). "Landscape". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 25 x 30 cm; 48 x 53 cm (frame). Orphaned at the age of ten, fortune was not very kind to him in his childhood. A reptile bit his foot in the forest of Meudon near Sèvres, where he had settled with some friends of his mother. The wound it inflicted did not heal well and his leg was amputated. Later his wooden leg became quite famous. At the age of 15, he entered the Sèvres studios, where he took up porcelain decoration. He also began to paint figures in richly colored dresses; he was interested in Turkish and Oriental scenes and many of his best works correspond to this period. At first he began painting figures, but later he would paint mostly landscapes. He is often associated with the painters of the Barbizon school. By 1831, he met Théodore Rousseau, for whom he professed great veneration (Rousseau was four years younger), but it was not until ten years later that Rousseau taught him his techniques. At Fontainebleau, Diaz found Rousseau painting his woodland pictures and decided to imitate him. Rousseau, then in rather poor health, was almost inaccessible, secluded himself in his house, and spent his time ranting against the world. Díaz used to follow him stealthily into the forest to observe him and learn about his painting technique; later Díaz became friends with Rousseau, to whom he revealed his eagerness to learn about his technique, and Rousseau, overwhelmed by his admiration, decided to teach him. Diaz exhibited at the Paris Salon and was decorated in 1851. During the Franco-Prussian War, he settled in Brussels. From 1871, he did not stop working, his work began to become fashionable and became very popular with collectors. In 1876 he died in Menton, where he had gone to recover from a cold he had caught during the funeral of his son. His most admired works are his forest and storm scenes. Many of the best are in the Louvre and the Wallace Collection, Hertford House. Perhaps his best known works are "The Pearl Fairy" (1857), Louvre; "Evening in the Forest" (1868); "The Storm" and "The Forest of Fontainebleau" (1870) at Leeds. Diaz had no disciples of renown, but he inspired painters such as Léon Richet or Jean-François Millet.

This pastel depicting a harem scene formerly belonged to the collection of the Egyptian lawyer and politician Mahmoud Khalil Bey (1877–1953), who collected art for five decades, beginning in the early 1900s, and owned over 300 works by the most important artists from the 17th to the early 20th century.
