Charles Dickmany (1863-1943) American, Oil on Canvas. Depicting a woman returning home at twilight. Signed in the lower left. Charles Dickman is known for Landscape, marine, seascape, mural. Painter, lithographer, muralist. Born on May 14, 1863 in Demmin, Germany. Dickman came to America with his parents in 1865. During his teens he worked for lithographers in Detroit and NYC before moving to San Francisco in 1882. His art studies were begun under Virgil Williams at the local School of Design. During 1886-1896 he and two partners maintained the Dickman-Jones-Hettrick Lithograph Company. He then sailed for Paris for five years of study at Academies Colarossi and Julian under Laurens and Constant, and in Munich with Carl Marr. While there he painted several views of the French coast near Etaples. Returning to California in 1901, he lived in Monterey where Dickman Street is named for him. A close friend and sketching partner of Wm Keith, early in the century he was dubbed "California's Painter of Sunshine." After returning to San Francisco in 1914, he had a studio at 628 Montgomery Street. During the PPIE of 1915, Dickman was a member of the Int'l Jury of Awards. Overall Size: 23 1/2 x 29 1/2 in. Phelps, Monterey, California.Private collection, Northern California.Michael H. de Young was an appointed national commissioner to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. During this exposition, de Young saw an opportunity to stimulate California's depressed economy. Despite the concerns of conservationists like John McLaren who feared extensive damage to the park, the Midwinter Fair opened on January 27, 1894. The fair featured numerous attractions, and covered 200 acres centered on what is the park's current Music Concourse. More than 100 buildings were erected for the exposition, and it was estimated that more than two million people attended. The Fine Arts building of the fair became the original M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, although it was subsequently rebuilt and another remaining attraction is the Japanese Tea Garden. Published in 1894 by Dickman-Jones Lithography in San Francisco the work consisted of 8 color illustrations of the fair.

(101.6 x 55.9 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Retouch, surface grime. N.B. Dickman was a member of the Bohemian Club which was established in 1872 as a salon for men interested in the arts. The founding members were all journalists for the San Francisco Chronicle, but membership quickly included artists such as fellow Tonalist painters William Keith, Xavier Martinez, Gottardo Piazzoni, and Giuseppe Cadenasso. The Bohemian Grove, located in Sonoma County, was established six years after the club's founding to hold its annual meetings. Artistic performances have been central to the Grove and given it the character of a summer retreat. The present work depicts the Campfire Circle, which is one of six performance venues on site. Both the club and grove continue to operate today, and membership includes such prominent political and business leaders as Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Colin Powell, and Charles R. Schwab.
