Old $6 price tag on verso. Sight size: 8 1/2" high x 7" wide. In a period gilded frame measuring: 10 1/4" high x 9" wide. Good condition. No inpainting. By age 19 Diehl decided to abandon his education at Oxford University to explore the Continent, and for a period studied painting in Milan, Italy. Eventually, he returned to England, establishing a studio in London and in 1889 Diehl exhibited one of his paintings at the Royal Academy. Throughout his busy life and career Diehl established studios in Englewood Cliffs, Lakewood and Asbury Park, New Jersey, Cape Cod, and Provincetown, and Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut.

Arthur Vidal Diehl (1870-1929) With Past Reflections 1927 The charming, luminous and beautifully placid small format view is signed lower right front and inscribed in detail verso. After years painting in Europe and across New England, Diehl began spending summers in Provincetown in the early 20th century. From roughly the 1910s through the 1920s, he maintained a seasonal studio there and painted numerous small-format oils like this example with its charming dedication in the artist's hand verso, the year before his passing: With recollections - pleasant ones -of days that were. To Mr. and Mrs. Lipp at Provincetown, Mass. July 7th, 1925 From the studio of the artist himself, Arthur V. Diehl. Board measures 10 x 7 with a framed size of 11.75H x 8.75W inches. BIOGRAPHY: Best known for his sand dune and harbor scenes of Cape Cod, Arthur Diehl was born in England and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1899. He came to America in the 1890s and became so associated with Cape Cod that Fox Movietone in 1921 made a short movie of him painting at Provincetown. He also had studies in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey; Boston, Worcester, and Truro, Massachusetts; and St. Augustine, Florida. He worked rapidly, often finishing his paintings as he talked to prospective buyers. He was also a talented singer and piano player.
