CHRISTIAN WILHELM ERNST DIETRICH, CALLED DIETRICY (WEIMAR 1712 – 1774 DRESDEN) - Harmonic Herders' Idyll with Nymphs

    Est: €2,000 - €4,000

This exquisite oil on panel, signed with the artist's characteristic monogram, is a masterful example of the "ideal landscape" that brought Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich international acclaim during the 18th century. The composition features a serene, Arcadian scene where nymphs and herders coexist in harmony, surrounded by their flock and cattle. Set against a backdrop of sun-drenched ancient ruins and soft, rolling hills, the work reflects the strong influence of Italianate landscapes and the refined elegance of the French Rococo. Dietrich’s virtuosity is evident in the luminous atmosphere and the delicate, fluid brushwork used to render the figures and the textures of the animals. The warm, golden palette enhances the idyllic and timeless quality of the scene. As a court painter to the Saxon Electors and a professor at the Dresden Academy, Dietrich was celebrated for his ability to synthesize the styles of the great masters while maintaining a unique, sophisticated charm. This well-preserved panel represents a peak of decorative and narrative finesse in German Baroque painting . Oil on wood, 34.5 x 33.5 cm. Monogrammed “D” lower right.

The pictorial surfaces are in patina with slight superficial dirt and antique restorations visible in photo under UV. CHRISTIAN WILHELM ERNST DIETRICH, CALLED DIETRICY (WEIMAR 1712 – 1774 DRESDEN) Head Study of a Bearded Old Man

    Est: €200 - €400

This compelling head study of an elderly man is a characteristic work by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, one of the most prolific and technically gifted German artists of the 18th century. Known for his "protean" ability to paint in the manner of Rembrandt, Ostade, or Watteau, Dietrich here demonstrates his mastery of the tronie—a genre focused on exaggerated facial expressions and character types. The sitter’s weathered features, deeply recessed eyes, and textured silver beard are rendered with fluid, confident brushwork and a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, directly evoking the Dutch Golden Age influence that Dietrich so admired. The reverse of the wooden panel features an old wax seal and a descriptive paper label linking the work to a Munich collection ("Cammerer München") and explicitly identifying the artist as Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich. As a court painter to Augustus III in Dresden and later a professor at the Academy, Dietrich’s works were highly sought after across Europe. This intimate panel serves as a superb testament to his psychological insight and his role as a bridge between the Baroque tradition and the refined sensibilities of the Enlightenment.

CHRISTIAN WILHELM ERNST DIETRICH (Weimar, Germany, 1712- Dresden, Germany, 1774). "Figure at the Edge of a Waterfall," 1740. Pen, ink and brown wash. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 20 x 20 cm; 45.5 x 42 cm (frame). Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich was a German painter of the 18th century, active mainly in Dresden, where he worked as painter of the court of Augustus III of Saxony; He stood out for his extraordinary technical versatility and for imitating with great skill the styles of masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Teniers or Salvator Rosa, cultivating very diverse genres - religious painting, landscapes, genre scenes, portraits and mythological themes - within the late Baroque and early Rococo, to the point that some of his works came to be confused for years with those of those great masters, which contributed both to his fame during his lifetime and to his later historical interest.

A similar work is held in the collection of the National Museum of Norway, acquired in 1840 from the collection of the Romantic painter Johann Christian Dahl in Dresden. Dietrich, Christian Wilhelm Ernst: Die Darstellung Christi im Tempel

    Est: €3,000 - €3,500

Die Darstellung Christi im Tempel. Feder in Schwarz über Kreide, Pinsel in mehreren Grau- und Brauntönen; Einfassungslinie in schwarzer Feder. 27,7 x 36 cm. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
