Charles Edward Dixon, RI, British 1872-1934- Below Greenwich; pen, ink, and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed, dated, and inscribed 'Below Greenwich / Charles Dixon / 1900' (lower right), 54 x 36.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Charles Edward Dixon was the son of the genre painter Alfred Dixon (1842-1919). He worked principally as a marine artist, with many of his works now held in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and also produced a number of illustrations for publications which included the Illustrated London News, the Graphic, and the Sphere. The present work effectively conveys the traffic and bustle of the River Thames towards the end of the 19th century, when it was still central to the transportation of goods across London and further afield. This work recalls a strikingly similar composition, of comparable dimensions, which sold at Bonhams, London, on 18 October 2017, lot 19 (£5,250).

Charles Dixon 1872-1934 Khedivial Mail Line. 1922. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image. Framed. The Khedivial Mail Steamship & Graving Dock Co., was formed in 1898, bringing together disparate ships and ports run by the Egyptian government. It operated passenger and cargo service between Alexandria, Constantinople and Syrian ports and between Suez and Red Sea ports. Here, the Mosque of St. Sophia-Constantinople and the Ras el-Tin Palace, Alexandria are both depicted in insets. The single stack Famaka, pictured at top, was built in 1922 and served the company until 1927 when it was chartered to another company and renamed. A well-regarded painter of maritime scenes, Dixon primarily worked in watercolors, but also painted in oil. "Dixon exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy, with 52 works recorded from 1880-1920, as well as exhibits at the New Watercolour Society. In 1900 he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours" (www.artnet.com).

Original vintage travel advertising poster for Red Star Line featuring stunning artwork by Charles Edward Dixon (1872-1934) of the SS Pennland cruise ship sailing in front of white cliffs with sailing boats by the coast and a tug boat named Josephine in the foreground. Founded in 1871 the Red Star Line provided transatlantic shipping and transportation services until the company was taken over by Holland America Line in 1935 after being declared bankrupt. Launched in 1920 as the Pittsburgh for the International Navigation Company, the transatlantic ocean liner was renamed Pennland by Red Star Line in 1926; she was converted into a troopship in 1940 and was attacked during World War Two in the Saronic Gulf and sunk in 1941. Printed in Brussels. Large size. Excellent condition, backed on linen. Country of issue: Belgium, designer: Charles Edward Dixon, size (cm): 110x70, year of printing: 1920s.

CHARLES DIXON (1872-1934) KHEDIVIAL MAIL LINE. 1922. 38x24¾ inches, 96½x63 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image. Framed. The Khedivial Mail Steamship & Graving Dock Co., was formed in 1898, bringing together disparate ships and ports run by the Egyptian government. It operated passenger and cargo service between Alexandria, Constantinople and Syrian ports and between Suez and Red Sea ports. Here, the Mosque of St. Sophia-Constantinople and the Ras el-Tin Palace, Alexandria are both depicted in insets. The single stack Famaka, pictured at top, was built in 1922 and served the company until 1927 when it was chartered to another company and renamed. A well-regarded painter of maritime scenes, Dixon primarily worked in watercolors, but also painted in oil. "Dixon exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy, with 52 works recorded from 1880-1920, as well as exhibits at the New Watercolour Society. In 1900 he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours" (www.artnet.com).
