He was a talented painter and draughtsman but turned increasingly to sculpture in the years immediately following WWI. Later, his reputation was overshadowed by sculptors such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. In 1933, he sustained a serious injury which restricted his ability to carve. In 1946, he was appointed Head of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art and the following year was awarded a CBE. In 1951, he was elected RA. Dobson found the female nude the most satisfactory form to carve, which probably led to his later work being characterised by a softer, more sensual approach. Stanley Casson was a leading authority on both Greek and early 20th Century sculpture. He was friends with a number of leading practitioners including Eric Gill and Frank Dobson. He studied Classics at Oxford before travelling to Greece on behalf of the British School in Athens, where he undertook pioneering research in Greek history and Art and became fluent in Greek. He became a Reader in Classical Archaeology and Fellow of New College, Oxford as well as Assistant Director of the British School at Athens and published several books on Ancient Greece and also on Modern Sculpture. During World War II he worked in Intelligence and for the SOE, liaising between the British and Greek authorities, with responsibility for the protection of cultural monuments and antiquities. He was killed in April 1944, when his plane crashed off the Cornish coast, shortly after take off, on its way to Egypt.

Frank DOBSON (1888-1963) "Kneeling Female Nude" Bronze print on marble base, signed Dobson. Frank Dobson was born in London on November 18, 1886. The son of a commercial artist, he showed early promise and was awarded an art scholarship at the age of eleven. After leaving school at fourteen, he became workshop assistant to the sculptor William Reynolds Stevens. He then studied at the Hospitalfield School of Art in Scotland. His work was influenced by his exposure to modernist art at Roger Fry's landmark exhibition in 1910-11. After spending the First World War in the Artists Rifles, he exhibited his first sculptures in Wyndham Lewis's Group X show in 1920. Over the years, he moved from his early Cubist-inspired sculptures to a more lyrical style based on the nude female form. He also produced a series of remarkable busts. His work was hailed by Roger Fry as "true, pure sculpture" and critic Clive Bell described his Cornucopia as "the finest piece of sculpture ever produced by an Englishman". After the Second World War, he was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art and awarded the CBE.
