Original World War II Poster - Loose Talk Can Cost Lives Sinking Boat by Steven Dohanos 1942

During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. During 1942, a specific group of posters based on the title Loose Talk Can Cost Lives was launched. This is one of the images from that campaign, in this case showing the sinking ship and the sailors in lifeboats as a result of careless talk. Stevan Dohanos was a successful commercial artist active in the mid-20th Century. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and admired artists like Grant Wood and Edward Hopper. He illustrated over 125 covers for the Saturday Evening Post. In the 1960s he served as chairman of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee. His paintings and prints have been highlights in many national museums and art institutions including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Dartmouth College. Biography from the Archives of askART: Stevan Dohanos is best known for the covers, more than 100, he painted for "The Saturday Evening Post" magazine during the 1940s and 1950s. Most of his illustrations depicted common scenes of everyday post-war American life such as a mobile home complete with pink flamingo, a gas station attendant inflating a child's toy, a souped-up motorcycle in the owner's driveway, and a simple ice cream stand. His works are often compared to those of Norman Rockwell, but Dohanos' characterizations are not as sympathetic as Rockwell's. Prior to the introduction of television as a medium, The Saturday Evening Post had great influence, as it was likely the most widely followed exponent of American popular culture. Dohanos' work appeared frequently on its covers, making the artist seem to be their cultural spokes person. During the 1960s, the Post did not show art on its covers. Dohanos was soon selected to be the National Stamp Advisory Committee's chairman and was responsible for selecting art for postage stamps. His designs were used on twenty-five postage stamps. Stevan Dohanos was born in Lorain, Ohio and studied at the Cleveland School of art. At age 27, he filled his first national assignment, which was a watercolor for "McCall's" magazine". Then he did murals for buildings in West Virginia, Florida and the Virgin Islands, and shortly after that began the illustration career that made him famous. A victim of tuberculosis, he donated his time creating seal designs for the National Tuberculosis Association and also did a commemorative Post Office stamp for the Cancer Crusade. From 1961 to 1963, he served as President of the Society of Illustrators and in 1971 was elected to the Society's Hall of Fame. His home was Westport, Connecticut. He also did numerous paintings, and examples of Dohanos' later works include paintings of still-lifes with American cultural symbols such as weather vanes, decoys and hydrants. It is said that Dohanos focused more on the locale of the people he portrayed rather than the people themselves, making him more objective than Rockwell. Norman Rockwell once described the privilege of painting for the Post, "the greatest show window in America for an illustrator. If you did a Post cover, you had arrived." The proof of Dohanos success was that he painted over one-hundred and twenty-five Saturday Evening Post covers during the 1940's and 50's, illustrating scenes of American life including baseball games, ice cream, mobile homes, gas stations, children with toys or butterfly collections, barns, and of course, Harley-Davidsons. Dohanos also illustrated for Esquire magazine amongst other magazines and designed forty-six stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. Later in his career, he did advertising commissions using still-life subjects rather than lifestyle images, showing people employed in various poses. Dohanos was considered the Cultural Spokesman for the Saturday Evening Post because of his clear visual images and their poignant messages of Americana revealed. He cherished his relationship with the Post, and relished the differences between his work, Rockwell's and other Post favorites. Dohanos along with Rockwell came to represent the quintessence of American magazine illustrators. With American entry into the war, food required to fuel the armed forces created a need for rationing on the home-front, as well as an uptick for farm production in America - at a time when many farm workers were deployed overseas. This poster highlights the need for labor to harvest America's abundant farms for both those at home and those fighting abroad. Stevan Dohanos (1907-1994) created this poster in 1943 during World War II to help raise awareness of espionage. Among several murals created for post offices during this time, Dohanos designed many American propaganda pieces that centered on the theme of “Careless Talk.” Stevan Dohanos was a successful commercial artist active in the mid-20th Century. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and admired artists like Grant Wood and Edward Hopper. He illustrated over 125 covers for the Saturday Evening Post. In the 1960s he served as chairman of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee. Original American WWII 1943 Poster by Dohanos - Bits of Careless Talk

Stevan Dohanos (1907-1994) created this poster in 1943 during World War II to help raise awareness of espionage. During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. Dohanos worked for the Section of Painting and Sculpture of the U.S. Treasury Department. Among several murals created for post offices during this time, Dohanos designed many American propaganda pieces that centered on the theme of "Careless Talk." Stevan Dohanos was a successful commercial artist active in the mid-20th Century. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and admired artists like Grant Wood and Edward Hopper. He illustrated over 125 covers for the Saturday Evening Post. In the 1960s he served as chairman of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee. His paintings and prints have been highlights in many national museums and art institutions including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Dartmouth College. With American entry into the war, food required to fuel the armed forces created a need for rationing on the home-front, as well as an uptick for farm production in America - at a time when many farm workers were deployed overseas. This poster highlights the need for labor to harvest America's abundant farms for both those at home and those fighting abroad. The concept of food as a weapon was carried through in many similarly themed posters that demonstrated the conservation of home-grown and canned foods, the repurposing of leftovers, or the benefits of healthy eating. Stevan Dohanos (1907-1994) was a successful commercial artist active in the mid twentieth century. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and admired artists like Grant Wood and Edward Hopper. He illustrated over 125 covers for the Saturday Evening Post. In the 1960s he served as chairman of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.
