Robert Doisneau* (Gentilly 1912 – 1994 Montrouge) Composer Arthur Honegger and painter Mac-Avoy gelatin silver print 20 x 19,9 cm verso photographer’s stamp SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 300 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 300 Robert Doisneau was a 20th-century French photographer who, from the 1930s onward, documented the streets of Paris with a distinctive blend of spontaneity and poetic sensibility. As a key figure in humanist photography, he developed a visual language that captured people's everyday lives with empathy, humor, and a keen sense of interpersonal dynamics. Closely aligned with photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Willy Ronis, and Izis Bidermanas, he profoundly shaped the visual culture of postwar Paris. His work oscillates between reportage and staged snapshots, imbuing even seemingly fleeting scenes with a narrative density and timeless quality. Doisneau achieved international renown, particularly for his iconic photograph "Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville" (Mating at the City Hall), which has become a symbol of romantic urban culture. His work is inextricably linked to the development of street photography and photojournalism, while simultaneously representing a deeply human perspective on urban life. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

Robert DOISNEAU Les Lilas De Menilmontant, Paris, 1956 The photograph, taken in Paris in 1956, depicts children playing near the lilacs in the Ménilmontant district. The work belongs to Doisneau’s so-called “golden years” of the 1950s and represents a characteristic example of his poetic street photography. With a human, at times subtly surreal perspective, he captured everyday Parisian life, in which warmth, humor, and resilience are central themes.

Provenance:Collection Robert Giraud, France From the 1940s and for over two decades, Robert Doisneau collaborated closely with journalist and writer Robert Giraud. A man of many lives, Giraud had been arrested by the Nazis and later joined the Resistance as editor of Unir (Unite). Deeply familiar with the margins of Parisian life, he introduced Doisneau to the world of street people, cafés, and night-time wanderers — inspiring a body of work far removed from the photographer’s more traditional images. Their shared curiosity for everyday humanity enriched both their work. Doisneau also introduced Giraud to Irving Penn while we was working on his Small Trades series, where Giraud — nicknamed “le jeune poète” by Penn — helped find the “men in the street” who became the models for that iconic project.

    Est: £800 - £1,200

Vintage silver gelatin print, image/sheet size 27 x 19cm, titled, credited, numbered, and annotated in various hands with three Rapho Agency stamps verso. The stamps to the verso of this print indicate that it is a vintage proof print once held at the Rapho Agency Archives in Paris. This image is one in a series of portraits from Doisneau's 1952 visit to Picasso's home in Vallauris, in which the artist wore a striped Breton shirt. The playful series proved so popular that this would become Picasso's signature outfit -- forever wearing stripes in the popular imagination. The present image is a vertical format view of Picasso peering through the window panes of a wooden door, his hands pressed against the glass. The verso notes that this image made the cover of LIFE Magazine in December of 1969; but in fact, it was a slightly different view through the same door that made the cover of LIFE's special double issue published in December 1968.
