CARLO DOLCI (Florence, 1616 - 1686). "Dolorosa". Oil on copper. It presents certificate of authenticity of Arabella Cifani.

          Est: €80,000 - €100,000

CARLO DOLCI (Florence, 1616 - 1686). "Dolorosa". Oil on copper. It presents certificate of authenticity of Arabella Cifani. Measurements 29 x 22 cm, 48 x 41 cm (frame). This work follows in the wake of Carlo Dolci as the treatment of the image is very subtle and delicate, with a use of diagonal light and a soft chiaroscuro while visible especially in the flesh tones. The Virgin is in a classical profile posture, a taste that began to be renewed in the Italian Peninsula during the fifteenth century and that would characterize the Renaissance and the subsequent Baroque period. The image stands out for the pathos of her gestures, a common feature in Carlo Dolci's painting. The devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin has its roots in medieval times, and was especially spread by the Servite order, founded in 1233. There are many and varied iconographic representations that have the central theme of the Virgin Mary in her Sorrowful aspect, a theme that Dolci took up almost four centuries later. The formal and stylistic characteristics of the work are those of the unmistakable Florentine painter Carlo Dolci, who, according to critics, was the most outstanding Baroque painter in Florence in the 17th century. In addition to the paintings destined to decorate the altars of churches, Dolci popularized compositions with half-length images of the Virgin, Mary Magdalene, saints and other sacred figures, with a polished and detailed technique, which were well received by the late Baroque clientele. Among his first works signed as an independent artist are portraits, a genre that the painter worked on throughout his career and for which he was particularly renowned. He forged his style by copying the works of the great masters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including Fra Angelico, Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo and Correggio. He was also in contact with the Medici collection, which had a great influence on his work of the Dutch painters of his time, such as Willem van der Aelst. Throughout his career and after his death he had numerous disciples, among them Agnese Dolci, his daughter, who followed the family tradition and made numerous copies of Carlo Dolci's paintings.

F.Baldassari, Carlo Dolci, Complete catalogue of the paintings, Firenze 2015, pp.204-207).

HEILIGE CÄCILIA AN DER ORGEL Öl auf Leinwand. 100 x 85 cm. Attributed to Carlo Dolci (Italian, 1616–1686) Crying Madonna

          Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Attributed to Carlo Dolci (Italian, 1616–1686) Crying Madonna Oil on copper 10 1/8 x 7 7/8 in. (25.7 x 20cm) Unframed. Provenance Private Collection, New York. Note We wish to thank Prof. Sandro Bellesi for his kind assistance in cataloguing the present lot. The present painting derives from the famous type of the Mater Dolorosa, which Dolci adopted around 1655 to great success along other Italian artists from the Seicento like Titian, whose version features a Madonna with clasped hands, now in the Prado Museum. Our version features a sad Madonna in profile, wrapped in a long mantle which covers much of her head. It seems to directly compare to the autograph version of Dolci (Mater Dolorosa, circa 1655, oil on canvas) in the National Museum of Western Art Tokyo, with the difference that it adopts a more closely cropped format, with the Virgin’s figure is truncated just below the hands. In the present work, the Virgin appears somehow troubled, her eyes lowered in sorrow and discretely shedding a tear. Yet, her face appears smooth and beautiful, which contributes to the idealization of the holy figure. Her cherry lips and the soft pink of her cloak's lining (other versions highlight a paler blue) contrast with the deep blue of the rest of the composition. The subtly radiant halo behing her head enables the figure to detach herself from the dark background, and stand out before the viewer. The modest size of the oil suggests a work of private devotion, in which Dolci specialized at the time especially when he was at the service of the Medici family. The number of existing copies and variants also confirm its success. The present work particularly demonstrates the artist's talent at depicting, with great naturalism and sensitivity, the Virgin's humanity and modesty.

          Est: €3,000 - €3,500

Workshop of CARLO DOLCI (Florence, 1616 - 1686). "Christ" and "Dolorosa". Oil on copper. Size: 23.5 x 18.5 cm (x2); 33.5 x 28 cm (mask, x2). The representation of the invocation of the Dolorosa, added to the figure of Christ carrying the attributes of Calvary, such as the crown of thorns and in this particular case the cross, was an iconographic pattern that developed widely among collectors. This demand led to the conception of the two scenes as an even element, each figure represented in a different work, with the intention of satisfying the devotional demand either in a private or public setting. In this case the two images are notable for the pathos of their gestures, a common feature in Carlo Dolci's painting. Due to the formal and stylistic characteristics of the works, they can be related to the workshop of the Florentine painter Carlo Dolci, who, according to critics, was the most outstanding Baroque painter in Florence in the 17th century. In addition to paintings intended to decorate church altars, Dolci popularised compositions with half-length images of the Virgin, Mary Magdalene, saints and other sacred figures, with a polished and detailed technique, which were well received by the late Baroque clientele. Among his earliest works signed as an independent artist were portraits, a genre in which the artist worked throughout his career and for which he was particularly renowned. He forged his style by copying the works of the great masters of the 15th and 16th century, including Fra Angelico, Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo and Correggio. He was also in contact with the Medici collection, which greatly influenced his work by Dutch painters of his day such as Willem van der Aelst. Throughout his career and after his death he had numerous pupils including Agnese Dolci, his daughter, who continued the family tradition and made numerous copies of his work.

JOHANNES DER EVANGELISTÖl auf Leinwand. 85,2 x 65,3 cm. 2. (1302021) Literatur: Vgl. Francesca Baldassari, Carlo Dolci. Accompanied by a copy of the expert‘s report by Sandro Bellesi, Sesto Fiorentino, n.d., emphasizing the good condition of the painting and dating it to the 1630s. The following three variants of this painting, differing only slightly from one another and held in public museums are known: 1. Berlin version: an octagonal work by Dolci (113 x 92 cm) is held in the Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin, under inv. no. 423. It was once acquired by Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia and is compositionally similar to the present painting, but it shows Saint John with a full beard and lacks the beautiful branch on the right that completes the present painting on the right. 2. Moscow version: A small picture held at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts under inv. no. 7, which is signed and dated 1643 or 1647 on the reverse. It is very similar to the present painting, the flesh tones are probably slightly paler, and the branch on the right is also missing. In a way, it just shows a section of our present painting. 3. Sarasota version: An outstanding small painting on copper (25.9 x 20.6 cm) is held at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, USA under inv. no. SN137. Literature: cf. Est: €3,000 - €5,000

The Head of the Mourning Mary in a Blue Cloak derives from a composition by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686) in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, painted c. 1660-1680 and repeated by many artists. Dolci was Mancini's teacher. The dates of his life are not exactly known, but he apparently lived in the second half of the 17th, to the early 18th century. Mancini painted numerous versions of this Madonna, which was very popular as a devotional painting because of its expressiveness and beauty. One of these paintings, in the collection of G. Pratesi (Florence), is dated 1691. The name of the Madonna goes back to the finger sticking out of the blue robe. According to legend, a picture of the Virgin Mary in 1527 showed Pope Clemens VII the way to flee to Castel Sant'Angelo when Rome was conquered.

294 e 295 “Carlo Dolci Catalogo Completo”, Francesca Baldassari) oppure “Sant’Agata”, collezione (pagg. 318 e 319 “Carlo Dolci Catalogo Completo” di Francesca Baldassari). The leading biographer of 17th-century Florence, Filippo Baldinucci, was a pupil of the painter Carlo Dolci; we owe much of what we know today about this extraordinary Florentine portrait painter. After initial training with Jacopo Vignali, he indissolubly linked his production to the sacred and portraiture theme, conceiving his talents as a true ‘gift from God.’ Introverted and devoted, his hand can be seen, in particular, in the delicacy and clarity of the faces, typical of Florentine portraiture and influenced by Correggio’s lesson; what we see here, however, appears somewhat different. Highlighting the gentleness of the features and the attention to the expressiveness of the depiction, here, Christ appears to be charged with a strong pathos, highlighted by the dark colours and the very close cut of the composition. The attribution to this master is also strengthened by the presence of a very similar iconographic work attributed to Dolci, now held in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
