        Est: €450 - €600

Anton Doll (1826 Munich - 1887 ibid.): Interior of the Moritzkirche in Augsburg with praying figure, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Stamp: Verso Collector's stamp, Georg und Dr. F. Wilhelm Denzel. Munich. 20th century, 19th century Date: 19th century Description: Inspired by his father Georg (1873-1959), who had already collected a basic stock of drawings and engravings, mostly of religious content, Dr Wilhelm Denzel began to collect them himself in the 1920s. He had a particular passion for landscape illustrations from the Munich School and humorous drawings, primarily caricatures from around 1900 from the "Simplicissimus", "Jugend" and "Fliegende Blätter" magazines. Denzel did not focus primarily on the well-known names when acquiring the sheets; unusual motifs and the quality of the drawings were always more important to him. This resulted in a thematically extremely diverse collection of around three thousand drawings with a focus on southern Germany, in which there are many interesting and never-before-seen works to be discovered, even in the classic genres such as landscape and genre - a cross-section of his multifaceted oeuvre over the course of a century, from around 1830 to 1930. In this auction, a small part of the collection, accounting for around ten per cent of the total, will initially be auctioned. Provenance: Verso: Fragment of a landscape study Keywords: Germany, Bavaria, Augsburg, Church, Baroque, Devotion, Interior, 19th century, Romanticism, Architecture, Germany, Size: Paper: 11,0 cm x 11,5 cm (4,3 x 4,5 in)

Österreich Doll, Anton Ruine Kropfsberg. 1870er Jahre. Öl auf Holzplatte. 14,5 x 23,5 cm. Insgesamt gut. Oil on wood panel. Signed and indicated. On the verso with label, there with corresponding work details by a third party. Framed in a gold-coloured stucco frame with vegetal decoration. - Traces of framing along the edges with isolated colour abrasion. Partially with craquelure due to age. Good overall. Atmospheric landscape of ruins with romantic echoes in an atmospheric night. - Our scene has echoes of 17th and 19th century Dutch landscape painting and features a staggered spatial backdrop and a balanced composition. Doll, who is regarded as the most important representative of the Munich School, had a great fascination for the Bavarian landscape and the rural life of its inhabitants.

Anton Doll (1826 Munich - 1887 ibid.): Village view, 1869, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Stamp: Collector's stamp, Georg und Dr. F. Wilhelm Denzel. Munich. 20th century, 19th century Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "A. Doll". Verso inscribed: "undeutlich bezeichnet und datiert". Date: 1869 Description: In the necrology for Anton Doll, quoted by Max Gruber, which his friends published in 1888, they describe not only Doll's preference for the Munich architectural motifs for which the painter was known, but also his tendency "to stroll out of town with his portfolio of drawings [where] he would get 'village lots' and mills". Doll wandered through the northern and southern Alpine countries with an alert eye for memorable, sometimes primal scenes. This drawing also comes from such excursions. It shows the view through a village street near a rising mountain. In the centre, a large church, perhaps a monastery complex, rises from the village silhouette. Inspired by his father Georg (1873-1959), who had already collected a basic stock of drawings and engravings, mostly of religious content, Dr. Wilhelm Denzel began collecting himself in the 1920s. He was particularly passionate about landscapes of the Munich School and humorous drawings, primarily caricatures from around 1900 from the magazines "Simplicissimus", "Jugend" and "Fliegende Blätter". Denzel did not focus primarily on the well-known names when acquiring the sheets; unusual motifs and the quality of the drawings were always more important to him. This resulted in a collection of about three thousand drawings with a focus on southern Germany, which is extremely diversified in terms of subject matter. Even in the classic genres such as landscape and genre, there are many interesting and never-before-seen things to discover - a cross-section of the multifaceted oeuvre over the course of a century, from about 1830 to 1930.
