John Henry Dolph Farm Genre Painting of Chickens

Lot 5: John Henry Dolph Farm Genre Painting of Chickens

Auction Date: Nov 25, 2017

Estimate: $800 - $1,200

Description: NEW YORK/OHIO, 1835-1903 An oil on board farm genre painting by John Henry Dolph. The work depicts a brood of hens outside of a chicken coop with two hens in the foreground near a galvanized water bowl with a pigeon perched on its rim. Notice the alertness and naturalistic detail of the standing chicken with a finally formed beak, comb, and wattle. Four hens are seen in the background, two rummaging in the shade beneath shrubbery and two in the entryway of the coupe. Dolph was later famed for his portraits and genre paintings of cats and dogs. This farm scene is part of a transitional time in his career from 1865 to 1870 after moving to New York. The work is signed in the lower left corner with a conjoined "JH Dolph"....

Lot 18: JOHN HENRY DOLPH, (American, 1835-1903), STUDY OF A CAT, oil on board, 8 5/8 x 12 3/8 in.

Auction Date: Oct 23, 2016

Estimate: $800 - $1,200

Description: JOHN HENRY DOLPH
(American, 1835-1903)
STUDY OF A CAT
oil on board
signed, l.l.
8 5/8 x 12 3/8 in.

Provenance: Henrietta M. ("Rita") & Peter N. Heydon, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Other Notes: The Rita & Peter Heydon Collection of Cat Paintings represents the culmination of four decades of passionate collecting by two lovers of felines. The Heydons adopted their first cat, a barn stray named "Marmalade," shortly before they married in 1968. Over their 47 year marriage, they adopted nearly one hundred cats, giving each a distinctive food name (Capuccino, Meatloaf, Mushroom, and Gravy, to name a few). Furthermore, Rita dedicated much of her life to the adoption of stray, abandoned, or unwanted felines through the Heydon's private charity, The Mosaic Feline Refuge. In 27 years of operation, the Refuge found adoptive homes for more than 3,000 cats. In 1979, the Heydons purchased their first feline oil painting from The Graham Gallery in New York. Over four decades, they continued their collecting of delightful and whimsical cat paintings during their travels to New York, England, and France. Their genuine affection for these felines is evident in their heartfelt and personal collection, and Peter hopes that buyers recognize not only the charm of the felines depicted in these paintings but also the aesthetic energy and creativity that so many of the artists brought to their subjects.
