Installation Artist, Painter

Heri Dono is an Indonesian visual artist as artist painter, sculptor, and installation artist.

Dono was born in Jakarta on June 12, 1960. He studied at the Indonesian Art Institute (Institut Seni Indonesia) in Yogyakarta, where he won the Prize for the Best Painting in 1981 as well as in 1985. He presented his work worldwide in a great number of solo and group exhibitions.

He is mainly active as an installation artist, and works with materials that come from varying places in the world. In his work, known influences can be noticed, like the life of the ordinary man, wayang kulit, becak driver and tau tau sculptures of the Toraja in Sulawesi.

Dono, who lives and works in Yogyakarta, mixes humoristic comments in his work on political and social problems in Indonesia. In 1998, he won a Prince Claus Award.

His style is often placed in the art form of new internationalism, which is a recent art form of artists in the world that challenge the Western hegemony of art, in contrast with the New Art Movement in the seventies and eighties that chose in favor of a Western expressions in art, with it taking leave of local traditions.

Dono is represented by Baik Art, which has spaces in Los Angeles and Seoul.

        Jul. 17, 2022

Heri Dono (b. Indonesia, 1960) Penunggang Kuda Beneran (The Real Horse Rider), 2018

        Est: RM50,000 - RM80,000

The provocative Indonesian artist Heri Dono fuses traditional folk art with contemporary idioms and happenings in the Now, with trademark caricatures drawn from the Javanese wayang. “His sense of humour — the fundamental wiring pattern of a broadly visioned, acutely alert and empathetic mind — is firmly rooted both in the fun and seriousness…,” wrote Astri Wright. The quest for global domination can be vicious. In the global chessboard, there are no good guys, though one of the self-christened saviours here is garbed in the superhero Batman’s outfit. He’s waving a red flag with the hammer-and-sickle emblem, a symbol of communism, seemingly in triumph rather than a peaceful gesture. The one with the orange mop hair who looks like a trigger-happy gunslinger, and a dotard to boot, has no good intention either, with a fawning gesture of surrender with upraised hands. While one (resemble Donald Trump?) is astride a ‘plaything’ rocking horse, the other’s ‘steed’ is one with monstrous claws on its forelegs. With all the purported weapons of death populating the composition, there’s little to suggest a conflict, more likely a collusion of convenience. So, what martial music is being played in the backdrop, the Russian State Anthem or the Star-Spangled Banner? The Prince Claus Award (Belgium, 1998), the Unesco Prize at the Shanghai Biennale (2000) and Indonesia’s covetous Anugerah Adhikarya Rupa (2014) – all these rank as outstanding accolades of Heri Dono, who has been invited to premier art events such as the Asia-Pacific Triennial (Brisbane, 1993) and biennales in Venice (2003 and 2015), São Paulo (1996), Havana (2000), Gwangju (1995, 2006, 2014), Shanghai (2000), Yokohama (2001) and Sharjah (2005). He had solo exhibitions in Asia, United States, Australia and Canada, and since 1990, art residencies in United Kingdom, Switzerland, United States, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. He has also taken part in Art Stage Singapore, Art Bali, Art Jakarta, ArtJog and Art Expo Malaysia, etc.

One of Indonesia’s leading contemporary artists, Heri Dono was the first Indonesian to break into the global art scene in the early 1990s. The artist has held over 50 solo exhibitions and participated in multiple group exhibitions at home and internationally. Based in Yogyakarta, he is well known for presenting paintings and installations influenced by his deep knowledge of Javanese puppet theater, folklores, underlined with sociopolitical commentary. In Batavia Express, the artist captures the belching steam emanating from a traditional locomotive and using it to suggest the speed and movement of the train. Heri Dono, an artist-sculptor-installation artist, won the Prince Claus Award in 1998 and the UNESCO Prize in the Shanghai Biennale in 2000. He also took part in the Australian Print Workshop in Melbourne in 2003. He famously dropped out deliberately a few months before his final examinations when studying Painting at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta, in 1980. His solos since 1988 include Unknown Dimensions (Basel, Switzerland, 1991); Blooming In Arms (Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1996); Dancing Demons And Drunken Deities (Tokyo, 2000); Fortress Of The Heart (Singapore, 2001); Interrogation (Vancouver, 2002); Upside Down Mind (Washington DC, 2003); Who’s Afraid Of Donosaurus? (Galeri Nasional Indonesia, 2004); Broken Angels (Melbourne, 2006); Madman Butterfly (London, 2011); Trump And Political Islam (Hong Kong, July 2017).

        Est: RM20,000 - RM32,000

It’s a one-way dialogue if one is looking at the barrel of a gun when talking about or negotiating something. That is the case of Prince Diponegoro, who virtually had to go on all fours with the tail between the legs some more, when talking to the supercilious Dutch plenipotentiary Gen. Herman Willem Daendels. Diponegoro, the oldest son of Hamengkubuwono III, started the Java War in 1825-1830 but was tricked and exiled to Manado and then Makassar. This episode was also taken up on canvas by Raden Saleh. The caricature style akin to wayang kulit used by Heri Dono is dubbed “language without any text.”Heri Dono, an artist-sculptor-installation artist, won the Prince Claus Award in 1998 and the Unesco Prize in the Shanghai Biennale in 2000.
