      • Original Trio of Vers le Mont Blanc Swiss Posters by George Dorival 1928
        Oct. 17, 2023

Original Trio of Vers le Mont Blanc Swiss Posters by George Dorival 1928

        Est: $9,000 - $12,000

This is a dramatic, minimalist series of France's famed Mont Blanc, framed between the silhouetted slopes of tree-lined hills. The graphic, zipper-like train track serves to both open up the mountain to view and lead the eye towards the focal point. Posted side-by-side, these three posters create a cinematic effect, a unique graphic concept among travel posters. (Hillion p. 214, Voyage p. 35, Alps 43, Art of Skiing p. 53, Affiche Art Deco p. 54.) The artist, Georges Dorival, has created a triptych of images to portray the Mont Blanc vista in a minimalist fashion showing three times of day and their colors. The unifying theme is the stark beauty of Mont Blanc. The poster series was commissioned by the French National Railway PLM (Paris, Lyons, Mediterane'e - the three main hubs). Justin Marie Georges Dorival, commonly referred to as Geo Dorival or Georges Dorival (1879 -1968) was a French poster artist. Unfortunately, there is little biographical information on him. In his career he created a significant body work in travel posters primarily for the different railroad companies in France. His artistic sense of design and proportions have made his work very appealing to poster collectors. Please note that this is a set of three posters. Each poster measures 30" x 41". These are Original Vintage Posters; not reproductions. The posters are conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

        La Côte d’Azur. 1919.

        Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: GEORGES DORIVAL (1879-1968) SIZE: 28 3/8 x 39 3/8 in./72 x 100 cm PRINTER: Cornille & Serre, Paris DESCRIPTION: This picturesque poster “quotes and illustrates Cap Ferrat, but above all represents Eze, a former Saracen landmark which has not changed for centuries and which raises its rocky peak facing the sea. At its feet the new small resort of Eze sur Mer which is at the beginning of the century only a village, but which nevertheless has some beautiful villas such as the one welcoming the President of the French Republic Raymond Poincare. As for Dorival, he worked from 1910 for the railway companies for which he drew famous landscapes. His style seems stripped down for the time, but it is still imbued with a certain classicism, such as this frame of symmetrical oleanders. The perspective is beautiful and the colors, orange and fuchsia, unusual” (Affiches Azur, p. 156). (Art Nouveau; Travel; Railway)

La Divorcee Original Vintage Poster by Georges Dorival French Operetta 1911

        Est: $700 - $1,200

George Dorival created this poster in 1911 to promote the comic operetta, La Divorce'e. The text describes La Divorce'e as a 3 act play with music by Leo Fall. Leo Fall (1873-1925) was an Austrian composer who created music for both opera and operettas, commonly known as musicals. His work was translated and performed all over the world. Originally written in 1908 as "Die Geschiedene Frau", "La Divorce'e" in French, and "The Girl On The Train" in English, the musical was popular and was performed in London and New York. The story revolves around a young actress travelling by rail who finds herself without a sleeping compartment for the night. A married gentleman offers his, but the two are accidently locked inside together. Although the event is innocent, the gentleman's wife learns of it and initiates divorce proceedings. Through the story, the couple reconcile with the actress falling in love with the judge overseeing the proceedings. The artwork reflects the lighthearted spirit of the comedy production. Made over 100 years ago, the subject of divorce carries a much different meaning in popular culture today. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Condition B+: overpainting along top edge; repaired tear at top, into text; ink stamp in upper image. A scarce and unusual travel poster featuring a gloomy and spectral Big Ben in the background and the glorious landscape of the French countryside prominent in the center. Printed in English, the poster was specifically aimed at the British market. The poster was designed by Dorival in 1911 (the date appears under his signature as it does in many of his designs) and was originally used by the Chemins de Fer d'Orleans to promote travel to Auvergne. That earlier version did not depict Big Ben, nor did it have the timetable and route map at the bottom. The poster's scarcity is likely due to the fact that it was released in the days prior to the outbreak of World War I. The schedule at the bottom of the poster advertises the timetable from "from the 1st of May." On June 28th, 1914, Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated, and on July 28th, war was declared.

The Roman Forum is one of the most celebrated archaeological sites in the world. Dubbed "The Heart of Rome," the Forum for centuries was the epicenter of public speeches, trials, processions and gladiator matches. This poster commissioned by PLM Railways (Paris - Lyon -Mediteranee) advertises travel to Rome by way of Mount Cenis, a group of mountains that connect the French Alps to Italy. The image features soft tones and warm colors as the light of golden hour gleams onto the ancient architecture that Rome has to offer. PLM was a French railway company that began between 1858 and 1862. The PLM (Compagnie des Chemins De Fer de Paris a Lyon et a la Mediterranee) operated chiefly in the south-east of France, with main transit lines connected to Paris and Cote d’Azur through Dijon, Lyon and Marseille. (Wikipedia). Justin Marie Georges Dorival, commonly referred to as Geo Dorival or Georges Dorival (1806-1968) was a French poster artist. Unfortunately, there is little biographical information on him. In his career he created a significant body work in travel posters primarily for the different railroad companies in France. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in good condition. There are minor handling and paper loss at the edges of the poster. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.

La Divorcee Poster by Georges Dorival French Operetta 1911

        Est: $600 - $1,000

Lucien Serre, Paris DESCRIPTION: "Far, far above, piercing the infinite sky, / Mont Blanc appears—still, snowy, and serene; / Its subject mountains their unearthly forms / Pile around it, ice and rock; broad vales between" – Percy Bysshe Shelley. These three posters for PLM Railway by Dorival are epic in their Modernist simplicity, almost anticipating Warhol in their colored iterations. "In the calm darkness of moonless nights, / In the lone glare of day, the snows descend / Upon that Mountain!" It's very rare to have the full triptych—noon, sunset, and night—together as a unified set. (3) (Art Deco; Travel; Trains)
