    J. DORNER (*1775) after EKEMANN-ALLESSON (*1790), Rest by the river at a mill, Lithography

    Est: €120 - €200

Johann Jakob von Dorner jun. (1775 Munich - 1852 ibid.) after Lorenz Ekemann-Allesson (around 1790 Malmö - around 1823 Stuttgart): Rest by the river at a mill, 19th century, Lithography Technique: Lithography over tinted stone on Paper Inscription: Signed in the stone below the depiction with "Dorner pinx. | J.G. Z | L. Ekemann del." Date: 19th century Description: Johann Jakob Dorner the Younger ( 1775 Munich - 1852 ibid.) learned the arts and crafts from his father and in his early years was initially occupied with etchings and lithographs. Influenced by his father's artistic oeuvre, however, he also devoted himself intensively to landscape painting and, together with renowned artists such as Johann Georg von Dillis and Wilhelm von Kobell, formed an early school of Munich landscape painting. The present lithograph after Dorner shows a romantic view of a shallow-flowing mountain river, where a rider has led his two horses and the dog accompanying him to water. In front of the gently rising, wooded hills of the background and next to a small drop in the river stands a remarkable building with interesting hydraulic engineering. Starting at the drop, the water is led over a wooden footbridge, like an aqueduct, to a water wheel at the side of the building. A small weir is provided to regulate the flow of water. In the building next to the water wheel and aqueduct, a mill or hammer mill could be seen here. The smoke rising from the chimney probably points to the latter. Hammer forges, where heavy hammers are lifted with water power for a blacksmith to use for his sweaty work, were still widespread in southern Germany in industrial times. Keywords: Nature, Mill, Water mill, Resting, Horses, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 34,8 cm x 43,2 cm (13,7 x 17 in), Depiction: 25,6 cm x 29,9 cm (10,1 x 11,8 in)

In front of the gently rising, wooded hills of the background and next to a small drop in the river is a remarkable building with interesting hydraulic engineering. Under a wooded low slope, a path with two visible tracks leads towards the center of the picture to a distant village. Old trees with many branches and delicate narrow leaves are detailed in many different tones; from yellow-green to dark green. In the lower left corner is a small body of water, into which water flows through a wooden pipe. Behind it are tree trunks, which can also be found in the lower right. An atmospheric painting with many differentiated color tones under a high, light blue sky, with white-gray cloud formations. In a gilded frame.

Dorner d.

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Johann Jakob Dorner (1775 Munich - Munich 1852), Mountain stream with beam bridge, 1817, lithograph Inscription: Monogrammed and dated lower left: "IvD 1817". Description: This lithograph is Johann Jakob Dorner's contribution to the collection of original hand drawings of the most excellent living Bavarian artists in the only suitable lithograph, which appeared in the same year and contained 30 sheets by artists such as Peter Heß, Simon Klotz, the Quaglios, Strixner, Wagenbauer and some others. It can be seen as a later counter-project to Wilhelm Reuter's collection of polyautograph drawings by excellent Berlin artists, published in 1804. In his contribution, Dorner uses a repertoire of motifs that was classic for him, but he cleverly uses the lithographic technique to work out different tonal values. The result is a harmonious overall picture with gentle transitions that is closer to the appearance of paintings than drawings. Our print is a proof before the later addition of an ochre-colored clay plate, which gives the whole a more painting-like character and suggests Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century as a forerunner of Dorner's work. The Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century as a precursor of Dorner's art even more clearly emerges. Keywords: Romanticism, Lithography, Landscape, Germany
