BIOGRAPHY: Dou was born in Leiden, where his father was a manufacturer of stained-glass. He studied drawing under Bartholomeus Dolendo, and then trained in the stained-glass workshop of Pieter Couwenhorn. In February 1628, at the age of fourteen, his father sent him to study painting in the studio of Rembrandt (then aged about 21) who lived nearby. From Rembrandt, with whom he remained for about three years, he acquired his skill in colouring and in the more subtle effects of chiaroscuro, and his master's style is reflected in several of his earlier pictures, notably a self-portrait at the age of 22 in the Bridgewater Collection, and in the Blind Tobit going to meet his Son, at Wardour Castle.At a comparatively early point in his career, however, he developed a distinctive manner of his own which diverged considerably from Rembrandt's, cultivating a minute and elaborate style of treatment. He is said to have spent five days in painting a hand, and his work was so fine that he found it necessary to manufacture his own brushes.Notwithstanding the minuteness of his touch, the general effect was harmonious and free from stiffness, and his colour was always fresh and transparent. He often represented subjects in lantern or candle light, the effects of which he reproduced with an unparalleled fidelity and skill. He often painted with the aid of a concave lens combined with a convex mirror (the former sharpening perception, the latter providing a rightway-up image to paint from), and to obtain exactness looked at his subject through a frame crossed with squares of silk thread. His practice as a portrait painter, which was at first considerable, gradually declined, sitters being unwilling to give him the time that he deemed necessary. His pictures were always small in size. More than 200 are attributed to him, and examples are to be found in most of the major public collections of Europe. His chef-d'oeuvre is generally considered to be The Dropsical Woman (1663), and The Dutch Housewife (1650), both in the Louvre. The Evening School, in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, is the best example of the candlelight scenes in which he excelled. In the National Gallery, London, favorable specimens are to be seen in the Poulterer's Shop (1672), and a self-portrait (see above). Dou's pictures brought high prices, and one patron, Pieter Spiering, who acted as Swedish Ambassador in The Hague from the mid-1630s, paid him 500 guilders annually simply for the right of first refusal of his latest works. Queen Christina of Sweden owned eleven paintings by Dou, and Cosimo III de' Medici visited his house, where he may have bought at least one of the works now in the Uffizi. The Dutch royal court itself, however, preferred work of a more classical tendency.Dou died in Leiden. His most noted pupils were Frans van Mieris the Elder and Gabriel Metsu. Durch einen oben abgerundeten Fensterrahmen mit einem zur rechten Seite gerafften grünen Vorhang fällt der Blick auf eine junge Frau, die in ihrer rechten Hand einen Hühnervogel nach oben hält und mit der anderen einen glänzenden Henkelkorb umfasst. Auf dem unteren Absatz des Rahmens liegt zudem ein silberner Krug. Am rechten Fensterrahmen hängt ein kleiner Vogelkäfig. Das Licht fällt aus unbekannter Quelle auf das Gesicht, den Bereich des Dekolletés der Frau sowie auf das Federvieh und hebt dieses gegenüber dem dunklen Hintergrund besonders hervor. Note: The present work is inspired by the interior scenes which were hugely popular amongst 17th-century Dutch artists, with Dou's paintings also exhibiting similarities with those of his contemporaries Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667) and Frans van Mieris (1635-1681). The composition, with a lady seated under an archway, and various objects balanced on the ledge before her, recalls works by Dou housed in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge [34] and in the collection of the National Trust at Waddesdon Manor [2573].

Gerrit Dou is known for Trompe l'oeil genre and portrait painting. Gerrit Dou (April 7, 1613 - February 9, 1675), also known as Gerard and Douw or Dow, was a Dutch Golden Age* painter, whose small, highly-polished paintings are typical of the Leiden fijnschilders. He specialized in genre scenes and is noted for Italichis trompe l'oeil* "niche" paintings and candlelit night-scenes with strong chiaroscuro*. His first instructor in drawing and design was Bartholomew Dolendo, an engraver*; and he afterwards learned the art of glass-painting under Peter Kouwhoorn. At the age of 15 he became a pupil of Rembrandt, with whom he continued for three years. From the great master of the Dutch School* he acquired his skill in coloring, and in the more subtle effects of chiaroscuro; and the style of Rembrandt is reflected in several of his earlier pictures, notably in a portrait of himself at the age of 22, and in the Blind Tobit going to meet his Son. At a comparatively early point in his career, however, he had formed a manner of his own distinct from, and indeed in some respects antagonistic to, that of his master. Gifted with unusual clearness of vision and precision of manipulation, he cultivated a minute and elaborate style of treatment; and probably few painters ever spent more time and pains on all the details of their pictures down to the most trivial. He is said to have spent five days in painting a hand; and his work was so fine that he found it necessary to manufacture his own brushes. KÜCHENMAGD Öl auf Leinwand. 36,3 x 29,3 cm. Durch einen oben abgerundeten Bogen mit einem zur rechten Seite gerafften Vorhang fällt der Blick in eine Küche, in der eine junge Frau gerade aus einem Krug Wasser in eine Schale gießt. Unterhalb des Bogens ein hölzernes Brett, auf dem eine rote Lampe steht und mehrere Möhren liegen. Das Licht fällt von links durch ein Gitterfenster in den Raum und bestrahlt das Gesicht der Magd sowie die Objekte vor dem Fenster: ein grüner Kohl, eine im Inneren goldglänzende Schüssel sowie ein Korb. Zudem hängt ein Federvogel von der Decke herab. Anmerkung: Die Darstellung geht auf ein Originalgemälde des Künstlers zurück, das um 1640 datiert ist und sich im Louvre in Paris befindet. Während hier ein grüner Kohl gezeigt wird, ist es beim Pariser Werk ein Rotkohl. (1441341) (18)

Dutch school of the XIX century. Following models of the 17th century. After GERRIT DOU (Leiden, 1613-1675) and DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNG (Antwerp, ca. 1610 - Brussels, 1690). "The Dentist" and "The Beer Drinker." Pair of oils on copper. Frames of the nineteenth century. Presents faults. Measurements: 17 x 13 cm; 25 x 19 x 6 cm. We recognize in these two genre paintings tavern scenes originally made, respectively by the Flemish David Teniers The Young Man (The Beer Drinker) and the Dutch Gerrit Dou (The Dentist). They are juicy scenes as they show with humor and light-heartedness a dentist who (we presume without anesthesia) has just pulled out a tooth of a young man, from whose mouth comes a trickle of blood. Teniers's scene shows us a tavern interior, with a gentle-looking gent looking at us as he smokes his pipe and drinks. These copies on copy retain the gracefulness of the models.
