Arthur Garfield Dove Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1880 - d. 1946

(b Canandaigua, NY, 1880; d Center-Port, Long Island, 1946 NY) American Painter. Arthur Dove was born into a wealthy family in upstate New York. His parents never approved of his artistic aspirations but, after completing his undergraduate degree at Cornell University, Dove moved to New York City to work as a commercial illustrator. In 1907 Dove moved to Paris, where he remained for some months, also traveling to Spain and Italy. There he was introduced to new styles of painting and to lifelong friend and fellow artist Alfred Henry Maurer. When Dove returned to the United States, Maurer put him in touch with Alfred Stieglitz, a photographer and gallery owner. Stieglitz would become an important influence and a great friend to Dove. It was Stieglitz who pushed Dove to create what are often viewed as the first truly abstract paintings in America. Dissatisfied with city life, Dove moved to a farm in Connecticut. After splitting with his wife, he then spent seven years traveling on a houseboat with Helen Torr, another artist, who would become Dove’s second wife. Though plagued by poor health and financial difficulties Dove weathered the Great Depression and spent the latter part of his life in a cottage on Long Island, where he continued to produce work until his death.

Arthur Dove (1880–1946) was an American modernist painter known for his pioneering work in abstract art. He is recognized as one of the earliest American artists to embrace abstraction, and his innovative use of color, form, and texture had a significant impact on the development of modern art in the United States.Born in Canandaigua, New York, Dove began his career as a commercial illustrator before turning to painting full-time. He initially worked in a representational style, but he gradually moved towards abstraction as he sought to express the essence of his subjects in non-representational terms.Dove's early experiments with abstraction were influenced by his interest in music, nature, and the spiritual dimensions of art. He developed a distinctive style characterized by bold, simplified forms, vibrant colors, and dynamic compositions that conveyed a sense of energy and movement. One of Dove's most famous works is "Nature Symbolized No. 2" (1911–12), a groundbreaking painting that is considered one of the first purely abstract works by an American artist. In this painting, Dove used geometric shapes and vibrant colors to evoke the rhythms and patterns of the natural world, creating a powerful sense of organic unity and dynamism.Throughout his career, Dove continued to explore abstraction in various media, including painting, drawing, and collage. He was also an innovator in the use of unconventional materials, such as house paint, sand, and sawdust, which he incorporated into his artworks to create texture and depth.Dove's work was ahead of its time, and he struggled to gain recognition during his lifetime. However, his contributions to the development of abstract art in America were eventually recognized, and he is now celebrated as one of the pioneers of the modernist movement.Arthur Dove's legacy as an innovator and trailblazer in abstract art endures to this day, and his influence can be seen in the work of countless artists who followed in his footsteps. His bold experimentation and willingness to break with tradition helped to pave the way for the emergence of abstract expressionism and other avant-garde movements in the 20th century. Measures 30 x 22.25.

Arthur Garfield Dove (American, 1880-1946) Fire Island Landscape, circa 1942-44

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Arthur Garfield Dove (American, 1880-1946) Fire Island Landscape, circa 1942-44 Watercolor on paper 3 x 4 inches (7.6 x 10.2 cm) (sheet) Signed lower edge: Dove Property of a Distinguished New York Collector PROVENANCE: The artist; Dr. Mary Holt; Terry Dintenfass, Inc., New York; Private collection, acquired from the above; Acquired by the present owner from the above. In 1942-44 Arthur Dove worked on a series of 3 x 4 inch paintings and referred to them as Sketches. These small works allowed Dove to distil his thoughts into intense compositions. They are highly treasured as a window into the artist's process. Many of these works embody the core of Dove's imagery, the abstraction of nature. Dove kept the Sketches for his own personal use and did not consign them to Alfred Stieglitz to show. Some became studies for paintings. In the 1980's Dove's son donated groups of the Sketches to prominent museums across the country, to give public and scholarly access to the work and to help disseminate awareness of his father's achievement. The museums include: The National Gallery, The Metropolitan Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Amon Carter Museum, Wichita Art Center, Museum of Fine Art Boston, the Arkansas Art Center and the Wadsworth Athenaeum.
