This poster was part of an advertising campaign series entitled ‘To Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. The series comprised a selection of follies and sometimes unusual attractions, encouraging the public to explore the British countryside. One of many female British artists who worked for Shell, Pamela Drew (1910-1989) produced this commission for the company in 1936 and was best known for her paintings of marine and aviation subjects. John Knox was a Scottish minister, theologian and writer who was a leader of the country’s Reformation. He was the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

      "Leonardo's Hot Rod" depicts a man on a flying machine. Lithograph is titled, signed and dated. Drew studied art in London before marrying an Irish peer. They returned to live in Ireland until WWII, when Pamela joined the 'Wrens', working with the RAF Coastal Command in Plymouth. This led to her painting numerous works of an aviation theme and eventually, in 1955, the British Air Ministry granted her the status of war artist. Her paintings today are sadly little known and rarely appear at auction. Measurements: Overall size: 19 1/4 x 24 3/4 in. Sight size: 12 3/4 x 18 in.

      *Pamela Drew (1910-1989) CRATER AT NIGHT (ADEN) Signed l.r., pastel 54.5 x 75cm Pamela Drew was born in Burnley and studied at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London and later in Paris. During the war she served with the Wrens, working with RAF Coastal Command in Plymouth. Her association with the Air Force led to a commission to record the activities of the RAF in Kenya and the Middle East. Many of her works are now in the Imperial War Museum, London.
