Date: 1945 Description: In 1945, the year of his appointment by his former teacher at the Bauhaus, László Moholy-Nagy, to the Institute of Design in Chicago, Werner Drewes was better known for his abstract works. But in the same year he exhibited watercolours after nature at the Kleemann Galleries in New York, to which Lyonel Feininger wrote a preface.1 In order to integrate these figurative works, which the public found surprising, into the previous figurative works into Drewes's previous abstract oeuvre, Feininger formulated: "The sources of visual experience sources of visual experience always come from nature. The greater our capacity to exploit these experiences to their to perfection and to transform them into pictorial form, the stronger the impression on the viewer. viewer. "2 According to Feininger, the views of nature are to be understood as "legitimate documents in the development of his continuous progress towards the final work".3 Feininger refers here to abstract and representational art and our present drawing stands in this context. For even though Drewes' work at the Catskill Falls near the near the artist's summer home in New York State, which he bought in 1933, it contains much more surrealism than one would expect from a drawing. surreal than one might expect from a drawing in front of nature. inhospitable and fantastic under the black sky. On a bright yellow hill trees stand out bluishly in peculiar craggy peaks. In front of the wooded hills on the shore and with broken branches in the centre of the composition, a monstrous tree structure with a pinkish The pink bark of this monstrous tree is reminiscent of bare skin. The bizarrely moving figure of the tree reinforces the disconcerting, almost uncanny character of the entire landscape. The silhouette anthropomorphic appearance with its bird-like head conjures up thoughts of Max Ernst's of Max Ernst's hybrid of man and bird, the uncanny LopLop, the inhabitant of a poisoned paradise. of a poisoned paradise.4 Ernst saw his own pictorial inventions mirrored in the pristine, rugged so that fantasy and reality are inextricably interwoven. In the same way blurs in the face of the peculiar American nature around the Catskill Falls. Falls, the exact separation between imagination and reality becomes blurred. Not only is nature the supplier of a pictorial language in forms, it succumbs to art in the imagination of the artist himself. In both Max Ernst's Ernst and Werner Drewes, sublime nature is conquered and incorporated by the fantasies it arouses. and incorporated.
