Mixed media with oil and oil chalks on chipboard Hans Christof Drexel (1886-1979) - German painter Signed in chalk ‘Drexel’ lower left Sketch of another figural scene in oil on the reverse Dimensions: 85 x 115 cm In natural wooden trim frame: 87 x 117 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany Condition: The work shows small scattered paint chipping as well as losses in the board to the margins. In addition, there are several losses of color on the reverse. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame has been replaced and is in very good condition. Hans Christof Drexel (1886-1979) Hans Christof Drexel was a German painter who belonged to the expressionist avant-garde artists at the beginning of the 20th century. During his studies of medicine and architecture he was already able to publish his first graphic works in the art nouveau magazine 'Jugend' edited in Munich. Drexel went on study trips to the famous Académie Julian in Paris and around 1908/09 to Rome. The painter was in contact with many important contemporary artists such as Emil Nolde, Henry van de Velde, Henri Matisse as well as with Edvard Munch later. In 1912 he participated in the legendary 'Sonderbund' exhibition in Cologne. At the beginning of the 1920s Drexel went to Berlin, and after World War II he settled down in Munich, where he worked as an art teacher and travelled to north and south America. A majority of his early works (before 1945) had been destroyed so that the artist is widely unknown today. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
