Frantisek Drtikol staged nude models with skulls several times in the course of his photographic career. In contrast to earlier versions, which were still committed to Pictorialism, the present print shows a more modernist approach: the model and her surroundings are clearly captured, with light and shadow as central elements of the composition. The vintage print dates from the year in which he was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Art Exhibition in Paris; this marked the beginning of Drtikol's most successful creative phase, whose works fetch the highest prices on the art market also nowadays. His Art Deco nude photography, characterised by geometric elements, expressive, dynamic poses and dramatic lighting, made him internationally renowned. His muse Ervina Kupferova, a dancer at the Czech National Theatre who had modelled for Drtikol since 1914, posed for the character of Salome. The two were married in the year this photograph was taken. The rarely offered triangular composition shows her with the severed head of the Baptist in her hands and two servants, the one on the left holding the tray on which the gruesome gift had been brought. In 1935 František Drtikol stopped his photographic activity and devoted himself mainly to painting and spiritual teachings. It was painting that helped him to fully express the meaning values he attached to light. His paintings dealt with the themes of productive landscapes, symbolic figurative compositions related to photographs of nudes, and often depicted glowing female figures, stripped of unnecessary earthly ballast. Glowing women, archetypal beings who move quite freely, have found an earthly paradise. Carefree, wise and sharing a transcendent world of knowledge and infinite possibilities. During this period, he created a number of photographs using very elaborate techniques and pigment processes. He often combined female nudes in expressive gestures and movements with dramatic lighting. When František Drtikol left the photography studio, he devoted himself fully to painting. Its landscape setting includes lovely Czech motifs of winding rivers, rocks, broken horizons of fields and hills, often completely without figural staffing. František Drtikol was born in Czech fine art as a photographer. His feeling for light and nude photography made him famous in our country and around the world, but in 1935 he completely abandoned photography. He was sinking deeper and deeper into himself. “God is where we let him. Meditation and invocation led him to spiritual growth and awakening. A silenced being closed off to the world shuts down to absolute liberation and a rain of divine light swirls wildly around it. The spine of the being is a white light that shoots towards the sky. Although František Drtikol is considered one of the most important world photographers of the first third of the 20th century and his work is represented in a number of public and private collections, in 1935, when he was 52 years old, he sold his studio in Vodičková street. He became famous with his nude photos, which also foreshadowed part of his painting work, which he fully devoted himself to in the following years. The half-naked woman represents a more realistic and materialized position of his work, where he is inspired by curves, light and shadow. When František Drtikol sold his studio in Vodičková Street in 1935, he was 52 years old. He definitely stopped being a photographer, according to himself, and returned to his love - painting. His paintings dealt with the themes of spiritualized landscapes, symbolic figurative compositions, following photographs of nudes, and often depicted glowing figures of women, stripped of unnecessary earthly ballast. Women shining, archetypal beings who move through the landscape in which they have found an earthly paradise. Carefree, wise and sharing a transcendent world of knowledge and infinite possibilities. The posing girl in František Drtikol's drawing reveals his strong orientation towards the artistic act with elements of art nouveau and art deco, which was reflected in photography and later transformed into painting. The drawing comes from the period just before František Drtikol sold his photography studio and fully devoted himself to his love of painting. He himself characterized his work with the words: "I am inspired by three things when working: decorativeness, movement, calmness and the expression of individual lines."
