Guy Pène DuBois Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1884 - d. 1958

(b Brooklyn, NY, 1884; d 1958) American Painter. Guy Pène du Bois is recognized for his exceptional approach to representing life in New York City. Rather than focusing on the gritty side of urban life, as did many of his peers, Guy Pène du Bois instead chose to concentrate on the metropolitan sophisticates of New York and Paris and the pretensions and conventions that accompanied their social standing. Pène du Bois' development as an ardent social observer began while he was studying under Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. Henri, a passionate realist, urged his students to take the people that surrounded them as subjects and to attempt to capture their essence. In 1905, Pène du Bois traveled to Paris, where he remained until 1908, spending the majority of his time surveying the crowds at various establishments and scrutinizing social relationships. His works during this time reflected the influence of Daumier and Toulouse-Lautrec. Upon his return to New York, the artist worked as a newspaper reporter, which provided continual occasion for social observation in a multitude of situations. Although he quickly transitioned to art criticism, the initial experience of covering the beat provided the artist with a plethora of subject matter. He returned to live in France from 1924 until 1930.* Upon returning to America, du Bois continued creating portraits of bourgeois culture as well as landscapes, until the decline of his health in the 1950s. Lot Essay While an important figure in the annals of American Art, Guy Pène du Bois defies easy categorization; as an artist, he mixed a realistic approach with modern stylization, but as a critic, he was acutely aware of the numerous aesthetic movements at play in the 1930s. Executed two years after the artist returned to America from France, the present work embodies this duality.  In Teddy at the Typewriter, Pène du Bois presents us with an elegant, fair-haired young woman dressed in a blue floral dress typing pages at a table. Behind her, a stack of staggered books rests upon the mantel. Despite the cheerful, rose-toned palette, the scene is disconcerting, which is not surprising given Pène du Bois’s ("a clever satirist" according to Duncan Phillips) often sardonic portrayals of the New York Elite. While the present work could depict a strong, independent woman focused on her task at hand, the slightly skewed perspective, especially noticeable in the table that leans towards us, could also indicate the uneasy presence of a spectator. The male gaze, which physically and metaphorically looks down on the subject, may explain the woman's closed expression and frozen pose. Pène du Bois therefore places the viewer in the uncomfortable role of voyeur–a quiet and possibly unwelcome observer who disrupts the woman’s solitude and productivity.

Scene of Flamenco Dancers in a Paris Cafe, likely thinly applied oil on canvas board, signed lower left. Pène du Bois was born in Brooklyn, NY, descended from French immigrants. He first studied with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and later continued his training with Robert Henri. Pène du Bois was greatly impressed with Henri's credo that "real life" was subject matter for art and throughout his life a realist philosophy informed his art as well as his parallel career, art criticism. In 1905, Pène du Bois made his first visit to Paris where he painted scenes of fashionable people in cafes rendered in the dark tonalities and impasto associated with the Ashcan School. By 1920, he had achieved his mature style, which was characterized by stylized, rounded, almost sculptural figures painted with invisible brush strokes. The subjects of his paintings were often members of society whom he gently satirized. Overall size: 23 1/2 x 31 3/8 in. Sight size: 15 1/2 x 23 1/2 in.

We wish to thank Mara Miller for her invaluable assistance cataloging this lot. Ms. Miller believes this painting is a portrait of William Pène du Bois, the artist's son and well-known children's book writer and illustrator and later Art Editor and co-founder of The Paris Review. In an email to Heritage Auctions, she writes," [William] was born in 1916, so would have been 23 years old at the time this portrait was painted. The family had returned to New York CIty from living in Garnes, France, for six years in 1930, when William would have been 14 years old. When he finished high school at 18, he was offered an architectural engineering scholarship at Carnegie Institute, but in 1935 his first children's book, Elisabeth the Cow, was accepted for publication, and it was published in 1936. He was 19 at the time of publication, and continued to write and publish children's books from then on. In 1941 he enlisted in the army (WWII) and was stationed for the duration of the war in Bermuda. He married Jane Bouche (daughter of artist Louis Bouche and a friend and neighbor of Guy Pène du Bois) while home on leave in 1943. They later divorced, and in Paris he met and later married the famous costume designer of operas, ballets, and Broadway shows, Willa Kim. "So here is William (if it is he) in 1939, already a published writer, about to enter the Army in two years and to be married two years after that while home on leave. . . . One can tell from the slight widow's peak in the middle of the hairline, as well as the low cheekbones like his father's, that it is most likely William Pène du Bois. . . . Whoever he is, it feels definitely that he is not simply a friend." HID01801242017

        Jun. 30, 2022

GUY PÈNE DU BOIS Portrait of a Woman.

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

GUY PÈNE DU BOIS Portrait of a Woman. Oil on paper, circa 1935. 415x350 mm; 16 1/4x13 3/4 inches. Signed in oil, upper right recto. Provenance: Private collection, New York. Pène du Bois (1884-1958), born in Brooklyn, spent his childhood on Staten Island and attended the New York School of Art as a student of Robert Henri and classmate of George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, Walter Pach, and Gifford Beal. Henri advocated for faithful depictions of urbanites, usually done quickly (as a newspaper illustrator would) and picking up the threads of his subjects' anecdotes. A promising young artist, Pène du Bois studied for a short time in Paris and exhibited at a Salon in 1905. He returned to New York in the summer of 1906 and started work as a reporter for the New York American, eventually becoming an art critic for the publication. During his career as a writer, he would also contribute to Arts and Decoration, the New York Post, International Studio, Creative Art, and Arts Weekly. Pène du Bois established himself as an artist in the 1910's and was one of the founding members of the Whitney Studio Club in New York in 1918. As part of his work for the Club, he arranged his very close lifelong friend, Hopper's first exhibition in 1920. As an extension of his successful painting and writing, he became a well-respected curator, juror, and teacher. The foundation of Pène du Bois's mature style is Henri's philosophy of accessibility and urban realism, from which he subtracted the Ashcan style anecdotal narrative and added his own imagination and ambiguity. His glamorous subjects are not to be envied, as they are frequently detached, either psychologically or physically isolated in an almost satirical way.

Known for satirical genre, especially of high society, Guy Pene Du Bois was a prominent New York artist in the early 20th century, and was part of the group that broke with conventional approaches of the National Academy of Design. Often his work seemed to have a narrative that was mysterious but addressed issues of urbane sophistication. Guy Pene Du Bois was the father of painters Yvonne and William Du Bois and Raoul Du Bois was a cousin. Pene du Bois is best remembered for his paintings of the 1920s of Jazz Age America in which he subtlety comments on the emptiness of bourgeois life. Note: A keen observer of class dynamics, Guy Pène du Bois built a successful artistic career documenting the bourgeois lives of the Parisians and Americans he encountered throughout his lifetime. Born to Louisiana writer and journalist, Henri Pène du Bois, Guy inherited his father’s enthusiasm for the French language and culture. In 1905, after spending his early career studying under Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase and alongside fellow students George Bellows and Edward Hopper, he traveled to Paris with his father where his work was exhibited in the Paris Salon for the first time that same year. Due to his father falling ill, he was forced to return to New York in 1906. There, he would go on to become an art critic for the New York Tribune and remain involved in the local art scene, even helping to organize the 1913 Armory Show, which included several of his works. Du Bois would return to Paris in 1924 for a few years to focus on painting, before settling in New York once again to teach at his own art school and the Art Students League in New York. While he was known primarily as a satirist of social scenes, du Bois’ painting on offer here is a rare and tender still life. The pink, white and red tones of the flowers glow against the saturated blue background, and the artist’s expert and effortless brushwork is demonstrated in the shading of the vase and the petals of the flowers. Painted later in his life, this 1948 composition is a haunting example of du Bois’ mature talent. Ref.: Torchia, Robert. “Guy Pène du Bois”. National Gallery of Art. Aug. 17, 2018. www.nga.gov. Guy Pene Du Bois Seated Female Nude Oil Painting

        Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Guy Pene Du Bois (American, 1884-1958). Oil on canvas-laid board painting depicting a nude woman sitting on a bed and gazing downward. Signed and dated 1933 along the lower right. The artwork is housed in a simple gilded frame. Guy Pene du Bois was born in 1884 to a French family living in New York. When he was fifteen years old, he enrolled in the New York School of Art, where he studied alongside other notable painters, including his friend Edward Hopper. In 1905, he moved to Paris to paint and exhibit modern Parisian scenes of men and women existing in public spaces. Du Bois moved back to New York after a year in France, and he was hired as a police reporter and illustrator for the New York American. He was not passionate about journalism, but he had a knack for writing, so he became an art critic. As time went on, he had little motivation to paint, so he continued writing art and music criticism for numerous publications. In the 1920s, du Bois moved back to France and finally found inspiration to paint. His oil paintings focused on the human form; du Bois liked to observe and paint subjects of varying social classes. After several years of painting French society, he returned to America and taught art while still painting and writing art criticism until he died of cancer in 1958. Provenance: Collection of Bruce Dayton & Ruth Stricker Dayton, Minnesota.

GUY PÈNE DU BOIS (1884-1958) T.S. Eliot / Prufrock. [CARICATURE / LITERATURE]

        Est: $2,500 - $3,500

GUY PÈNE DU BOIS (1884-1958) T.S. Eliot / Prufrock. Likely portrait for The Saturday Review of Literature, circa 1932. Pen and ink on paper. 210x320 mm; 8 1/4x12 1/2 inches, on 11x17 1/2-inch sheet. Signed "Guy Pène du Bois" in lower right image; captioned "Portrait of a Poet" at lower center in artist's hand. Archivally matted and framed with James Graham & Sons gallery label on verso of backing board. Pène du Bois caricatures the angular features of T.S. Eliot and includes references to his prolific poetry through the spines of books stacked nearby. While in life Eliot typically wore his hair slicked back, Pène du Bois gives him curls and depicts him daintily holding a spoon, a clever reference to Eliot's first professionally published poem from 1915, 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,' which contains the line 'I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.' Pène du Bois' portrait was likely completed in 1932, around the time Eliot returned from London to the United States in order to become a professor at Harvard, where he once studied.

GUY PÈNE DU BOIS (1884-1958) Lytton Strachey. [CARICATURE / LITERATURE / QUEEN VICTORIA]

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

GUY PÈNE DU BOIS (1884-1958) Lytton Strachey. Portrait published in The Saturday Review of Literature, February 6, 1932. Pen and ink on paper. 215x318 mm; 8 1/2x12 1/2 inches (sight). Signed "G. P. du Bois" in lower right image, and dated [19]32. Archivally matted and framed with gallery and exhibition labels on verso of backing board. Not removed from frame for inspection. Exhibited: "Guy Pène du Bois: Artist About Town," Corcoran Gallery of Art, October 10-November 30, 1980, with subsequent tour to Joslyn Art Museum, January 10-March 1, 1981, and Mary and Leigh Block Gallery, March 20-May 10, 1981 (No. 61 in catalogue). Pène du Bois' portrait of Lytton Strachey, the British writer and critic, was published shortly after Strachey's death, which occurred on January 21, 1932. Pène du Bois depicts the author in his characteristic beard and horn-rimmed glasses while seated and absorbed in his own thoughts. A founding member of the Bloomsbury Group and author of Eminent Victorians (1918), Strachey is known for his biographies that combined psychological insight with witty irreverence. Pène du Bois' inclusion of a rough portrait of Queen Victoria hanging on the wall is a subtle nod to Strachey's 1921 biography of the Queen, which was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Pène du Bois began contributing illustrations of literary figures for The Saturday Review of Literature upon his return to the United States in 1930 after spending four years in France.
