[après 2017], décrit et reproduit sous le n°10, p. 29 Notice: « Albert Dubois, qui adopte en 1883 comme nom d'artiste celui de Dubois-Pillet (accolant le nom de sa mère à son patronyme), entame sur le tard une carrière artistique, alors qu'il s'est engagé dans le métier des armes. Après quelques tentatives infructueuses, il est admis par le jury au Salon en 1877, avec une nature morte intitulée Un coin de table (cat. 79). Deux ans plus tard, il est à nouveau reçu avec des Chrysanthèmes (cat. 80), un sujet assurément classique. Peintre appliqué, il s'empare de sujets commerciaux, probablement moins pour vendre ses toiles que pour s'essayer à des genres prisés par les peintres de Salon. Mais pour briller dans ce milieu, il aurait mieux valu se recommander d'un maître, comme il était coutume de l'indiquer au livret du Salon. Or, Dubois est autodidacte et peint d'abord pour assouvir une passion. "[...] n'étant l'élève de personne, il ne convenait pas à mon caractère de m'en attribuer un de fantaisie", confie-t-il en 1888. Pas même Manet, décoré de la Légion d'honneur au seuil de la mort, et dont Dubois aurait été proche vers 1883. Cette éventuelle rencontre avec Manet aurait-elle incité Albert Dubois à s'orienter vers la peinture claire, dite impressionniste. Après la mort du maître, alors qu'il est refusé au Salon de 1883, il se joint l'année suivante au groupe des artistes indépendants prenant une part importante à sa fondation. Devenu Dubois-Pillet, il y rencontre une jeune génération d'artistes. Qu'il s'agisse de Georges Seurat, issu d'une formation classique, ou de Paul Signac, Dubois-Pillet partage avec eux le choc ressenti devant la découverte de la peinture impressionniste dans les galeries parisiennes dans les années 1875-1880. Signed 'dUBois PillEt' in black lower right. From around 1885, the painter Albert Dubois-Pillet from Paris created numerous landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes in a pointillist technique. Inspired by Georges Seurat, the founder of pointillism, he developed a divisionist style of brushwork during his transition from impressionism, and he was also the first to apply this technique to portraits. Dubois – he began using the maiden name of his mother, Pillet, in 1884 – was a trained French officer, who served in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and was even briefly a prisoner of war. He became interested in art early on, and he trained from the mid 1870s as an autodidact and under the direction of the artists Seurat and Signac, with whom he was friends. In 1884, after being denied permission to participate in the Salon, Dubois-Pillet founded the artists association “Société des Artistes Indépendants”, writing its statues and serving as its organiser. The landscape “Champs en Ile-de-France”, which is on auction here, is from Corboud’s excellent collection of impressionists. For the field lying in the foreground, Dubois-Pillet has selected little dabs of green, red and yellow paint. The forest that closes the scene off at the back has been painted with a bold mix of violet and dark green tones. The sky behind it appears in light yellow, becoming darker towards the upper edge of the picture. Three trees with red and brown leaves rise up to link all the picture’s planes together. While Dubois-Pillet has still used the dots in the lower half of the picture to describe individual flowers, stalks and leaves, the paint increasingly gathers into coloured shapes towards the horizon. On the whole he has created a vibrant landscape painting full of blooming cornflowers. Its dating to 1889/1890 makes it one of his final pictures.
