Attributed to EDOUARD LOUIS DUBUFE (France, 1819-1883) "Portrait of Countess Hallez Claparede". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 116 x 90 cm; 146 x 120 cm (frame). Large oil on canvas portrait of a French aristocrat. Attributed to Edouard Louis Dubufe, it is believed that it could be the Countess Hallez Claparede, lady-in-waiting of the Empress Eugénie. The painting presents a young lady in a three-quarter pose. Her gaze is serene, direct and confident, with large dark eyes acting as the emotional focal point of the portrait. Her expression is restrained, reflecting the composure and decorum expected of a woman of her position. Her pale complexion contrasts beautifully with her dark hair, combed with a middle parting and slicked back, following the fashion of the time. The dress is a clear indicator of the fashion and luxury of the court of the Empress Eugenie. She wears a sumptuous evening dress with a wide neckline that leaves the shoulders bare, typical of the period. The dress is made with layers of ruffles of a flowing fabric, probably tulle or organza, with subtle touches of blue and pink trim, creating an ethereal effect. An exquisite gold brooch is pinned at the center of her neckline, and a pink silk bow falls elegantly over the skirt. An intricately detailed black lace shawl drapes over her arms, creating a strong and sophisticated contrast to the whiteness of the dress. In her left hand, she delicately holds a folded fan. The side lighting highlights the countess's face, neck and shoulders, gently modeling her features and making her emerge from a dark, sumptuous background. The artist delights in the representation of the different textures: the velvety softness of the red fabric on which the arm rests, the ethereal transparency of the ruffles, the metallic shine of the brooch, the delicacy of the lace and the smoothness of the skin of the sitter. The setting is opulent but discreet, so as not to detract from the figure's prominence. A dark green wallpaper or damask with floral motifs can be seen. To the left, the gilt frame of another painting suggests a luxurious interior. Through Dubufe's mastery, the work synthesizes the ideal of beauty, elegance and refinement of high society during the reign of Napoleon III. Dubufe was born in Paris. His father was the painter Claude Marie Dubufe, who gave him his first art lessons. Later he studied with Paul Delaroche at the École des Beaux-arts. In 1839 he received the third class medal at the "Salon des Artistes Français". In 1842 he married Juliette Zimmerman (daughter of the composer and pianist Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman), who was a sculptor. The composer Charles Gounod became Édouard's brother-in-law (and lifelong friend) when he married Juliette's sister Anna. During a stay in England between 1848 and 1851, Dubufe discovered the great English portraitists, whom he would try to emulate. His official career as a portrait painter began in 1853 with portraits of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. That same year her son Guillaume, who would also become a famous painter, was born. In 1855, Juliette died in childbirth. Dubufe continued to enjoy great success among the aristocracy, and the emperor commissioned him to paint the Congress of Paris in 1856. Subsequently, the empress requested his help to decorate her "Salon Bleu" in the Tuileries Palace.

A la suite de ce dernier, lui-même très grand portraitiste, il se spécialisa dans les portraits de ses contemporains les plus prestigieux. L'impératrice Eugénie passa notamment sous ses pinceaux, réclamés par les plus grands de son temps. Notre portrait n'échappe pas à cette règle. Notre toile figure le portrait de Marie-Elisabeth de Flavigny, marquise de La Grange par son mariage avec Gustave le Lièvre, lui-même fils de Auguste-François Le Lièvre et de Nathalie Victurienne de Beauvau-Craon dont nous présentons le portrait par Girodet dans cette même vente (lot 169). Il est tout à fait amusant de constater le changement de style, l'évolution des techniques, et le rendu de la matière picturale en une génération, entre ce que constituait le portrait mondain sous la Restauration et ce qu'il est devenu au début du Second Empire. Dubufe, Édouard Louis (1819–1883) was a French portrait painter. Oil on canvas. Painted in 1840, back has carved in frame "Restored by Harry W Jones Hempstead, L.I.,MAR 1971". Canvas measures 21" sight, framed to overall size of 29x29. During a stay in England, from 1848 to 1851, Dubufe discovered the great English portrait painters, who he would seek to emulate. His official career as a portrait painter began in 1853 with portrayals of Emperor Napoléon III and the Empress Eugénie. That same year saw the birth of his son Guillaume, who would also become a well-known painter. In 1855, Juliette died in childbirth. Dubufe continued to enjoy great success with the aristocracy, receiving a commission from the Emperor to paint the Congress of Paris in 1856. Later, the Empress asked for his assistance in decorating her "Salon Bleu" at the Tuileries Palace. In April 1866, the journal L'Événement ran an article by Émile Zola that criticized Dubufe's qualifications for acting as a judge at the Salon and suggested that he belonged to academic cliques that compromised his judgment. A celebrated salon painter with numerous commissions, the Parisian-born Édouard Dubufe was known primarily for his portraiture. Highly regarded by the art-going public and by contemporary critics, the Frenchman's flattering portraits, executed to a high degree of perfection, were subsequently forgotten for decades. Coming from a family of painters, Dubufe’s artistic tendencies began very early on. His first teacher was his father, Claude Marie Dubufe (1790–1864). Later he studied with Paul Delaroche (1797–1856), and initially dealt exclusively with religious subjects before being drawn more and more to portrait painting, in part for financial reasons. From 1848 to 1851 he lived and worked in England, where the great English portraitists of the time influenced him and his work. Als gefeierter Salonmaler mit zahlreichen Aufträgen erlangte der gebürtige Pariser Künstler, Édouard Dubufe, vor allem mit seiner Porträtmalerei Bekanntheit. Vom Kunstpublikum hochgeschätzt und von Kritikern oft kommentiert, gerieten die schmeichelhaften und bis zu einem hohen Vollendungsgrad ausgeführten Porträts des Franzosen lange Zeit in Vergessenheit. Einer Malerfamilie entstammend, finden sich seine künstlerischen Anfänge bereits in frühen Jahren. Zu Beginn erhielt er Unterricht bei seinem Vater, Claude Marie Dubufe (1790–1864). Später studierte er bei Paul Delaroche (1797–1856) und behandelte zunächst ausschliesslich religiöse Themen, bis es ihn unter anderem aus finanziellen Gründen mehr und mehr zur Porträtmalerei hinzog. Während der Jahre 1848 bis 1851 lebte und arbeitete er in England, wo die grossen englischen Porträtisten jener Zeit auf ihn und sein Schaffen wirkten. Historique : Leonilla Ivanovna Bariatinskaïa (Леонилла Ивановна Барятинская) fut une aristocrate russe mariée en 1834 au prince Ludwig de Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, aide de camp du tsar Nicolas Ier. Célèbre pour sa grande beauté et son intellect, la princesse fut le sujet de plusieurs portraits peints par Winterhalter, dont le plus connu est au Getty Museum (1843).
