Jean Dufy Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

(b Le Havre, France, 1888; d La Boissière, 1964) French Painter. Following his service in the military, from 1910-1912, Jean Dufy relocated to Paris. Inspired by the work of Braque and Picasso, Dufy created watercolors that expressed a heightened understanding of color and light. In the mid-1920s, Jean Dufy became captivated by the music of the time, such as Darius Millaud and Francis Poulenc, and incorporated this interest into his artwork. While depicting orchestral and musical subjects, Dufy later became enchanted by the coast of Northern France and began to create majestic and effecting landscapes. Throughout the 1950s Dufy explored Western Europe and North America, but inevitably returned to his watercolors and oils of Paris. Just two months after the death of his wife, Ismérie, Jean Dufy died in 1964 in La Boissiere.

Jean Dufy "Au Spectacle" Gouache & Graphite on Paper

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Hand signed and dated in the lower right.  Date: 1923 Provenance: Gallery label from Wally Findlay Galleries.    Image: 17 1/4" x 12 1/2"  Frame: 27" x 22 1/2"    Condition: The image is in good condition with bright and pigmented colors. See images for details.    Artist Bio: Jean Dufy (1888–1964), younger brother of Raoul, was essentially self-taught, turning to painting after seeing Matisse's work at a Le Havre exhibition in 1906; settling in Montmartre after the First World War he became acquainted with Andre Derain, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. He is best known for Parisian street and society scenes, circuses, horse races, theatre, and above all orchestras and musicians. Watercolor and gouache are central rather than secondary to his practice — the medium suits his rapid calligraphic notation, transparent washes over a quick graphite scaffold, figures indicated in a few flicked strokes with ink-black accents anchoring a high-key palette. He also designed for Theodore Haviland of Limoges for more than thirty years.

Jean Dufy, 1888 Le Havre – 1964 Boussay

    Est: €250,000 - €350,000

VOILIERS DANS LE PORT DU HAVRE, 1907 Öl auf Leinwand. 63,5 x 79 cm. Rechts unten signiert. In breitem vergoldetem gekehltem Rahmen. Beigegeben ein Zertifikat von Jacques Bailly, Paris, 10. April 2011, in Kopie.

    Est: RM75,000 - RM130,000

In the 1900’s, Jean Dufy decided to pursue a career as a painter after visiting an exhibition put on by the “Cercle de l’Art Moderne” in Le Havre. There, he discovered the works of Picasso and Derain, with whom became friends years later. After receiving formal training at Le Havre’s École des Beaux-Arts where both his brother, Raoul Dufy and Georges Braque had studied. His brother was an established artist in Paris and he took Jean under his wings in 1912. Jean had his first show in 1914 at Galerie Berthe Wall where he presented his watercolours for the first time. Following the favourable response from his first exhibition, he went on to work intensively on his paintings of flowers, landscapes and animals. During the post war period, Jean’s painting and unusual choice of canvas; porcelain style bold and vibrant colours that exude a romantic feel. Capturing everyday Parisian life was a clear passion for Jean Dufy but he never missed an opportunity to reflect his impressions in his work after the 1950’s. In 1925, Jean Dufy won a gold medal at the L’exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs for his porcelain designs, which focused on florals, and animal designs that were commissioned by Theodore Haviland in Limoges. His expertise in combining his loose decorative approach to colours and line during the early years of the 30-year association with Limoges is reflected in his artwork series called The Bouquet de Fleurs. It is a tasteful piece to add to a fine art collection especially since it is by a reputable Parisian artist who has greatly influenced the post expressionism style.

Gouache and watercolor on paper, signed and dated ‘[19]27’ lower right Provenance: Collection particulière, France Notice: « "L'importance de la lumière", disait Jean Dufy. Autre signature. » Jacques Bailly et Marie-Caroline Sainsaulieu [préface de], Jean Dufy (1888-1964), Catalogue raisonné de l’œuvre, Volume I, Paris : Éditions Jacques Bailly, pp. 36 et 38

JEAN DUFY (Le Havre, 1888 - La Boissière,1964). "Village with bridge. Watercolor on paper. It has slight restoration in the upper left area. It has an informative label on the back. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 31 x 37 cm; 56 x 62 cm (frame). This watercolor by Jean Dufy condenses with remarkable sensitivity one of the most characteristic qualities of the French artist: his ability to transform everyday scenes into lyrical visions built from the light, the chromatic rhythm and the spontaneity of the stroke. The composition, apparently simple, contains a synthesis of the French avant-garde of the early 20th century and a poetic view of the modern landscape. The work immediately reveals Dufy's aesthetic affiliation with Fauvism and with a certain French post-impressionist tradition. Color is not used here to faithfully describe reality, but to suggest atmospheres. The translucent blues, the watery grays and the delicate ochre shades generate a sensation of luminous serenity, almost musical, that envelops the entire scene. The watercolor is deployed through quick stains and loose lines that barely delimit the architectural forms, allowing the paper to breathe and actively participate in the luminous construction of the image. This economy of means demonstrates great technical mastery: The work must be understood within the artistic evolution of Jean Dufy, younger brother of the also celebrated Raoul Dufy, whose influence was decisive in his early years. Born in Le Havre in 1888, Jean was formed in an environment deeply linked to the artistic transformations of modern France. The discovery of the works of Henri Matisse, André Derain and Pablo Picasso marked his early sensibility, pushing him towards a painting free from academic naturalism. His passage through Fauvism, his contact with Cubism through Georges Braque and his experience as a designer for the Haviland porcelain manufactory in Limoges contributed to the development of an aesthetic based on linear elegance, decorative refinement and chromatic sensitivity. After the traumatic experience of World War I, Dufy became fully integrated into the Parisian art scene, where he consolidated a language of his own, far removed from both the radicalism of the more aggressive avant-garde and traditional academicism. His urban scenes, ports, regattas, concerts, racetracks and rural landscapes reflect an optimistic and musical vision of modern life. "Village with Bridge" belongs precisely to that more intimate and contemplative side of his production, where the artist abandons the Parisian bustle to focus on small provincial scenes treated with atmospheric sensitivity and an almost impressionistic delicacy. The work also allows us to appreciate the importance of travels and stays outside Paris in his artistic development. From the mid-twenties, especially after his trips to Venice, Dufy intensified his use of transparent blue ranges and light techniques such as watercolor and gouache, resources that allowed him to capture with immediacy the variations of light and the vibration of the landscape. It has slight restoration in the upper left area.

    Est: €6,500 - €13,000

Beschriftungen. Ca. 42 cm x 37 cm. Rahmen. Coloured chalks and pencil on brownish paper. Signed and dated 1926. Dedication "á mon ami Giran Max".

Jean Dufy, 1888 Le Havre – 1964 Boussay

    Est: €15,000 - €25,000

PAYSAGE DANS LE LIMOUSIN, 1928 Öl auf Leinwand. 54 x 65 cm.
