Signée en bas à gauche Certificat Fanny Guillon-Lagaille Se faufilant entre les silhouettes décharnées des arbres, une calèche glisse sur un sentier tracé dans la neige. Ne seraient les cercles rouges de ses roues, on en devinerait à peine la présence, tant son habitacle noir se confond avec les maisons de l’arrière-plan et son cheval blanc se fond dans la neige. Ici, ce sont les arbres qui semblent être le sujet du tableau. Leurs troncs longilignes, plantés dans la neige, strient toute la surface de la toile. Loin d’être immobiles, ils paraissent danser avec leurs ramures dépouillées qui se détachent sur un ciel grisé. Leur répartition est rythmée. Deux troncs, plus épais, encadrent la scène, se répondant de part et d’autre du chemin. A droite, l’arbre le plus proche de nous déborde du cadre, occupant toute la hauteur du tableau et nous invitant à y entrer. A travers cette trame, on distingue un passant, ombre noire qui se hâte doublée par la calèche, puis, plus au fond, quelques masures et, enfin, un mur. Ce dernier introduit une rupture horizontale dans cette composition ascendante. La ligne qui en délimite le sommet semble l’écho presque parallèle de celle du sentier. Ce plan coloré concentre la palette de toutes les couleurs du tableau. De son sommet dépassent d’autres arbres évoqués, cette fois, par de de simples striures colorées. Les couleurs apparaissent dans cette œuvre au fur et à mesure qu’on s’y enfonce. La profondeur crée la couleur. La touche, toujours très graphique abandonne les teintes sombres du premier plan pour se muer en hachures fauves dans le lointain, où les ocres jaunes le disputent aux terres de Sienne et aux verts. Ce sont aussi les arbres qui varient d’un tronc à l’autre, ici verdâtre, là gris-bleu puis là-bas violet ou rouille... Dufy, en pleine période fauviste, nous montre son talent de coloriste dans cette gamme chaude et bigarrée si caractéristique du mouvement qu’il quittera pourtant bientôt, préférant privilégier le graphisme qui fera sa signature. Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) est un peintre et décorateur français. Formé à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts du Havre, il commence sa carrière comme paysagiste en Normandie puis en Provence où il fréquente les « Fauves », Albert Marquet, Vlaminck puis Matisse. Il réalise de nombreuses scènes de rues pavoisées et de fêtes de village, aux touches vives et colorées, comme ce Bal populaire qui date de cette période. Influencé par l’œuvre de Cézanne, il s’oriente ensuite vers la nature morte, puis rencontre Braque et Picasso. Tous trois travaillent ensemble, échangeant leurs recherches formelles, qui les conduiront au cubisme. Mais très vite Dufy se construit son style propre dissociant la couleur du dessin : les traits viennent se superposer aux plages colorées comme dans ce qui reste son chef-d’œuvre La Fée électricité, du Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris. Artiste polyvalent et curieux, Dufy s’essaie à tous les arts, des cartons de tapisse- rie à la lithographie, jusqu’à la céramique, dessinant décors et costumes de théâtre pour Jean Cocteau, illustrant textes d’Apollinaire, de Gide ou encore de Colette.

Pencil drawing made by Raoul Dufy around 1910, a stage in which the artist consolidates a graphic language of great freedom, marked by the rapidity of the stroke and the immediate capture of the figure. The work represents a seated woman, possibly in an interior, accompanied by barely suggested elements, such as a bouquet or floral motif on the left. The work reflects the artist's interest in drawing as an autonomous medium, capable of synthesizing form, movement and character with a very modern economy of resources. The nervous stroke, the compositional lightness and the importance given to the emptiness of the paper are linked to the sensibility of the Parisian avant-garde of the early twentieth century, in which Dufy participated from a personal position, between Fauvism, everyday observation and modern decorativism. Raoul Dufy was a painter, graphic artist and textile designer, recognized for a decorative, luminous language of great chromatic freedom. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre and, from 1900, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met Georges Braque. He began exhibiting in Paris at Berthe Weill's gallery. After a first stage influenced by impressionism, the impact of Matisse at the 1905 Salon des Indépendants oriented his painting towards fauvism. Later, contact with Cézanne and his cubist experiments contributed to the definition of his own style, based on agile structures, synthetic drawing and color applied with great spontaneity. His work dealt with themes such as maritime scenes, parties, concerts, horse races, flowers, interiors and nudes. He is represented in museums such as the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Van Abbemuseum, the McNay Art Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario, among others.

Der französische Modedesigner Paul Poiret und Raoul Dufy gründeten eine kleine Druckwerkstatt in der Pariser Avenue de Clichy, um variationsreiche Textilien herzustellen. Signed 'Raoul Dufy' in black lower right. The painting 'L'Allée d’Arbres', a colourful and high-quality cityscape by the Fauvist Raoul Dufy created in Normandy, is now offered for auction. The central motif is a bumpy road leading into the depth of the painting, lined with both tall trees and white houses. While a cyclist can be seen in the background, the man dressed in black in the foreground appears to be walking toward the viewer. The quality of the painting lies in the complementary use of shades of green and red, enhanced by intense yellows, blues, and a radiant white. The vivid colouration is characteristic of the work of Raoul Dufy, who began as an Impressionist, progressed as a Cubist in the tradition of Georges Braque, and turned to Fauvism in the 1910s. After engaging with the work of Henri Matisse and participating in the ‘Salon des Indépendants,’ he began to definitively break away from his influences around 1920. If simplification and abstraction of the motifs are also discernible for the first time in the portrait-format 'L’Allée d’Arbres', this may be a sign that Dufy was striving to establish an independent and personal style. The tree trunks in the upper third of the painting, rendered with hatching, and the visible brushstrokes also contribute to this, lending the painting an expressive quality.
