Oil on canvas of the Serengeti titled "AFRICAN WATER AT DAWN-ELEPHANTS, ORYX, ZEBRA & RHINO" by Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore (1870–1955), painter and printmaker of landscapes, animals and birds. The piece is nicely matted and framed. Some slight wrinkling to paper consistent with age. H13 1/2" W11 1/8" (without mat and frame)

Radclyffe) Etchings of East African Animals, 32 proof and limited edition etchings, some in duplicate, most on India paper, mounted on thick paper album leaves, numbered in pencil and signed in black by Dugmore, some with pencil captions, cotemporary half-morocco, gilt, very slight rubbing to spine extremities, oblong folio, [c.1910]. ⁂ A fine collection of proof and limited edition etchings of African elephants, lions, rhinos, buffalos, antelopes, zebras and Grant's gazelles. These etchings appear to date from c.1910, the year that Dugmore published his 'Camera Adventures in the African Wilds.'

At age twelve, his father, an eccentric nobleman, purchased a schooner, in which the family lived, cruising the oceans. Quarreling with his father, Dugmore struck out on his own. He struggled for many years to make his way. He opened a photographic studio, where he tried to make a living by painting birds. He then got a job in Northern Canada to study the beaver. In 1908, he visited Africa. This was followed by trips to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Labrador. On his travels he photographed and painted. On his return (he moved to America at some point), he lectured and wrote books. He was among the individuals responsible for the pursuit of big game with a camera, rather than a gun, leading to the wildlife art that is so widespread today.
