Jean Dupas 1882-1964 Bordeaux. 1937. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, one slightly into upper image; minor creases and restoration in margins. Dupas was trained as an academic painter and became a successful graphic designer and interior decorator. His style is the essence of refined and luxurious French Art Deco, with a sophisticated, sculptural elegance. Outside of the poster world, Dupas is largely remembered for his illustrations for Vogue, the splendid brochures done for Max Furrier produced by Draeger, and his interior decorations for the steamship Normandie (now at the MoMA). Within the poster world, his most famous work was for the XVme Salon des Artistes Decorateurs. He also designed posters for the fashion world both in Paris and London, where he did work for the London Underground. In 1937, he designed this poster for Bordeaux, his birthplace, as a promotion for the city's harbor, wine and monuments. The alluring, Art-Deco, allegorical beauty most likely representing the Garonne (Bordeaux's river), literally supports the wonderment of all that Bordeaux has to offer. Original vintage poster piece from a London Transport advertisement promoting travel by General Bus originally with the caption 'Establish a picnic and pass the day together' - Stunning artwork by the notable French Art Deco designer Jean Dupas (1882-1964) depicting smartly dressed ladies relaxing by a rippling waterfall, trees and lilies. A picnic basket also features holding bottles of wine, fruit, and a pie. The poster was part of a campaign designed to encourage London residents to use the "General" buses to travel out of the city into the countryside for day trips and picnics. The poster has been trimmed so that only the image remains. Poor condition, staining, minor creasing, trimmed edges, backed on board. In 1925 Dupas finally received international fame when he was asked by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann to decorate his pavilion at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels in Paris. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1926. Dupas worked as a ceramist with René Buthaud in the Sèvres porcelain factory in the early 1920's, though Dupas' interests soon turned to other art forms including poster design, painting under glass, tapestry, mosaics and lacquer.

Jean Dupas studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His graphic-decorative Art Deco style developed early during his stay in Italy after 1909. Dupas owed the stretching of proportions and quasi-systematic deformation of his mostly female figures, which his critics in the 1920s somewhat casually referred to as the "stovepipe style," to the influence of the Italian Mannerists. His favorite subjects included young women with elaborate hairstyles, voluminous and moving clothing, idealized landscapes, and fantastic birds. Through his penchant for fashion and decorative aesthetics, he captured the glamor and sophistication of the Roaring Twenties. Numerous commissions for the Exposition Internationale in 1925, for the ballroom of the Bourse du Travail in Bordeaux, for the Église du Saint-Esprit in Paris, and for the Salon de l'Argenterie at the Royal Palace in Bucharest, among others, attest to his popularity. JEAN DUPAS (1882-1964) ARNOLD CONSTABLE. 1928. 43 3/4x29 1/2 inches, 111x75 cm. Tolmer, Paris. Condition A. Matted and framed. Dupas was trained as an academic painter and became a successful graphic designer and interior decorator. His style is the essence of refined and luxurious French Art Deco, with a sophisticated, if somewhat stiff, elegance. Outside of the poster world, Dupas is largely remembered for his illustrations for Vogue, the splendid brochures for Max Furrier and his decorations for the steamship Normandie (now at the MoMA). This poster, commissioned by the Arnold Constable department store, is designed in the sophisticated Art Deco style of allegorical fantasies which was a hallmark of Dupas' work. Here, he depicts three women dressed in the fashions of the past, present and future, amid lush, slightly surrealistic scenery. Tolmer p. 79.
