  • Julien Dupré: "La Faneuse"
    May. 22, 2026

    Julien Dupré: "La Faneuse"

    Est: €20,000 - €30,000

DUPRÉ, JULIEN 1851 Paris–1910 Paris Title: "La Faneuse". Date: Around 1896. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 60.5 x 73.5cm. Notation: Signed lower left: Julien Dupré. Frame: Framed. Description: The painting *La Faneuse* is one of the most characteristic themes in the work of Julien Dupré, who devoted some twenty paintings to this subject over the course of his career. The figure of the haymaker, depicted gathering hay in the fields, becomes in his paintings a striking symbol of the dignity of rural labour and the close connection between humanity and nature. Sometimes she appears alone, set against the vastness of the landscape; at other times she is accompanied by another figure – yet she always embodies a quiet, industrious everyday life, free from idealising rhetoric and at the same time imbued with great human intensity. Dupré was one of the most significant representatives of 19th-century French Realism, a movement dedicated to the truthful depiction of contemporary life, particularly that of the working classes. In this context, his work is in the tradition of artists such as Jules Breton and Jean-François Millet, with whom he shares an interest in the rural world and the depiction of agricultural labour. Nevertheless, Dupré is distinguished by a particularly vivid use of light and a painterly style that combines precise observation with immediate vividness. As a keen and attentive observer, he succeeded in capturing the atmosphere of the French countryside – particularly that of Normandy and Brittany – in a striking manner. In his paintings, the landscape is never merely a backdrop, but an integral part of the composition: it comes alive through nuanced lighting and a naturalistic rendering based on intensive observation of nature. The figure of the haymaker blends harmoniously into her surroundings and appears almost as an extension of the earth itself. In addition to depicting human figures, Dupré also distinguished himself as an outstanding animal painter. Even his contemporaries regarded him as one of the finest painters of farm animals of his era. His ability to render horses, cattle and other working animals with anatomical precision and, at the same time, with a fine sense of expression, enhances the authenticity of his rural scenes. To this day, Julien Dupré’s work is held in high esteem, particularly in the United States, where many of his paintings are housed in major museums and collections. This enduring reception testifies to the timeless quality of his painting, which, with simplicity and depth, brings a long-gone world impressively to life.. JULIEN DUPRE'

    Est: €700 - €1,000

    Est: €30,000 - €40,000

(Paris 1851–1910) A Shepherdess with her Flock, signed Julien Dupré, oil on canvas, 74 x 92.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. We are grateful to Howard L. Rehs, Rehs Galleries Inc. for confirming the authenticity on the basis of high-resolution photographs.  The work has been included in the online catalogue raisonné of Julien Dupré with ref. no. T1147. A certificate issued by Howard L. Rehs, New York, dated 25 February 2022 is available upon request. Julien Dupré was born in 1851 and produced works in the French rural tradition until his death in 1910. He studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs to prepare his application to the École des Beaux-Arts. There he entered the studio of Isidore Pils and then, from 1875, that of Henri Lehman. Like Dupré, other naturalist painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage, Dagnan-Bouveret and Léon Lhermitte showed a growing interest in depicting the ordinary life rural people. Dupré made his debut at the Salon on 1 May 1876 and won his first medal in 1880. After a promising debut at the Salon, the art dealers Goupil and Knoedler started buying his work. Arthur Tooth then also purchased works from Dupré in order to introduce him to British audience. By the mid-1880s most of those paintings were handled by Etienne Boussod in Montmartre, the son-in-law of the art dealer Goupil. In 1887 Dupré was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. He was awarded a medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and the Legion of Honour. The shepherdess in this painting seems quietly alert, gazing over the flock of sheep in her charge. Thus idyllic rendition of country life combines all the hallmarks of Dupré’s most sought-after works: a girl at work in an expansive landscape, exuding the integrity and innocence typically associated with rural communities in the second half of the 19th century.
