Albrecht (1471) Dürer Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, copperplate engraver, b. 1471 - d. 1528

German Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer started his career as a goldsmith in his father's shop. Albrecht Durer's paintings, depicting religious figures, portraits, and self-portraits, were inspired by artists like Antonio Pollaiuolo and Andrea Mantegna. The Italian influence in Albrecht Durer's paintings is evident, as he used classic oil painting techniques to create pieces similar in style to artists like Michelangelo.

Albrecht Durer's prints, such as an early woodcut series Apocalypse, created in 1498, show a more macabre side to the artist's religious depictions. In the 1500s, his carvings began to move back toward contemplative pieces with softer imagery. Adam and Eve and The Last Judgement, Albrecht Durer's woodcuts of 1504 and 1510, respectively, have an uplifting feel and soft romanticism to them. Albrecht Durer "The Betrayal of Christ" Woodcut

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

This print was a posthumous print most likely done sometime between 1600 and 1800 CE using Durer's original carved block.    Albrecht Durer's mark in the lower left corner and dated in the upper left. Handwritten inventory number on the reverse.  Date: 1510 Provenance: Appraisal documents from Elayne Galleries and catalogue pages from F.W.H Hollstein German Engravings, Etchings, Woodcuts 1400-1700, Joseph Meder Durer-Katalog 1932, and more.    Image: 11" W x 15 1/2" T Frame: 22" W x 27" T   Condition: The woodcut is in very good condition. There are lines interrupting the print in the lower right, consistent with recorded issues of the printing block. Toning and spots to the paper, consistent with age. Please see images for details.    Artist Bio: Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) of Nuremberg raised printmaking to the level of painting. "The Betrayal of Christ" belongs to his Large Passion, a series of large-format woodcuts begun in the 1490s; this sheet is dated 1510 in the block and carries his AD monogram, and the complete series with Latin text was published in 1511. Durer worked the Large Passion at roughly 15 1/2 by 11 inches so that a woodcut would carry the presence of a painting, in contrast to the small cabinet scale of his engraved Passion. Later impressions from the surviving blocks and nineteenth-century reproductions of the series are common, so the period of any impression is established by the paper, watermark and block wear.

Gesamteindruck aber gut Outstanding and clear impression with carefully inked gaps in the margin. Trimmed to the image border, horizontal folds at the sheet edges reinforced. Verso restorations in the corners, small paper repairs. Fitted into an almost square format, Dürer shows Saint Christopher carrying the blessing Christ Child through a deep ford. With the child, he has shouldered the burden of the world, which is why he wades slightly bent through the water. Strong wind billows the garments and makes them flutter. On the shore, a hermit with a lamp shows him the right passage on his dangerous journey. He symbolizes the Church and its doctrine, while Christopher embodies practical charity. Both aspects of faith complement each other. The virtuoso woodcut is composed of a dense lower part and a largely open, thus light-appearing sky area. The striking depiction was popular and was repeated in at least five copies by other artists. We thank Armin Kunz, New York, and Dr. Phil. F. Carlo Schmid, Düsseldorf, for their scholarly advice. (1471 Nürnberg - 1528 ebenda) Friedrich der Weise, Kurfürst von Sachsen Kupferstich/Bütten, 1524. In der Platte sign, monogr. u. römisch dat. 1524. Wvz. Meder 102 Id ; Hollstein 102: Bartsch VII.112.104; Schoch I.98. Plattenmaß ca. 19 cm x 12,5 cm. Verso Galerie-Etikett. Rahmen. Provenienz: Galerie J. H. Bauer, Hannover. Copper engraving on laid paper, 1524. Signed, monogrammed and dated on the plate.

Frame 45x38cm, Sight Size 13x9cm (Frame 17.72"x14.96", Sight Size 5.12"x3.54") As one of the three masters of the High Renaissance, Raphael was born in Urbino and trained under Perugino. He absorbed compositional skills from Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo during his career in Florence and Rome, creating canonical masterpieces such as The School of Athens. His balanced, elegant aesthetic was widely reproduced by later engravers. This antique engraving copies his famous youthful self portrait: the young artist wears a soft black cap and plain dark garments, gazing sideways with calm temperament. Delicate hatching lines build subtle tonal gradations on his face. It is housed in an ornate 19th century European carved gilded wooden frame, decorated with scrolling foliage and fruit carvings at four corners, layered trim and dotted inner borders highlighting the print’s fine detail. It holds historical documentation value and produces an elegant decorative effect.
